Johannesburg - A 35-year-old man was arrested on Monday when he was caught speeding on the N3 with 1 300kg of dagga in his minibus, Gauteng police said.
The man was doing 147km/h in a 100km/h zone in his Toyota Quantum when traffic officials stopped him on the N3, near Heidelberg, at 06:25, said Constable Thivhulawi Tshilate.
"When traffic officials signalled him to stop, the driver sped off in a high speed. They gave chase until they cornered him between Spookbridge and Poortjie bridge," said Tshilate.
"The driver abandoned the vehicle and ran into the veld. Two traffic officials gave chase on foot and arrested the suspect."
Inside the minibus, police found 95 bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R1 million.
