Minister: SAPS ready for 2010

Pretoria - SA Police Service security preparations for the 2010 Soccer World Cup are well advanced, Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa said on Thursday.
Speaking at a justice, crime prevention and security cluster media briefing in Pretoria, he said the police had recently acquired two R44 Raven 11 helicopters to boost their air support capabilities.
A further four such helicopters would be delivered later this year.
"The security preparations and resourcing of the SAPS for the Fifa Confederations Cup in 2009 as well as the 2010 World Cup are well in advance."
In preparation for the big event, the police had held various "simulation exercises" in different provinces.
These involved "simulated scenarios and other aspects of our contingency plans to deal with any form of airborne and land threats," he said.
