Minor arrested in Griekwastad family murder

2012-08-21 14:58

Bloemfontein - A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a family murder on a Griekwastad farm on Good Friday this year, Northern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Captain Cherelle Ehlers said detectives arrested the boy in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.

Northern Cape farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christelle, 43 and their daughter Marthella, 14, were shot on the family farm Naauwhoek on April 6.

Police said at the time that Steenkamp's son, 15, heard shots fired while he was busy in an outside storeroom at about 18:30 on the day.

The boy discovered the bodies in the living room and drove to the police station in town to report the killings.

He handed two firearms over to police, which he said he found at the scene.

Ehlers said the boy was expected to appear in the Griekwastad Magistrate's Court on charges of murder on Thursday.

The investigation into the murders was continuing.

What is this Countries future? The system is completely stuffed and the population is taking their frustrations out on the innocent, rather than the useless ANC Government.

      handy.andy.773 - 2012-08-21 15:43

Larry, you are not following the story are you?

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-08-21 17:55

hehehehehheehe, Even this is the ANC's fault. You are entertaining at the very least.

      julie.vanniekerk.3 - 2012-08-21 20:22

Why don't you blame it on apartheid?

      mable.jacobs.90 - 2012-08-22 09:09

Did you even read this or are you just randomly making stupid comments???

"...a teenager was taken into custody at his school in Bloemfontein". Let's quickly do the maths. The murdered couple's son is a minor and attends a school in Bloemfontein.....now who could the murderer be?!

      kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-21 15:44

Interesting sum but lets wait see if there is a curved ball at play !

      crazyjourno - 2012-08-21 15:52

Curve ball - I seriously doubt it... Maybe jelousy plays a big role... Just so sad.

      klipkop.degroote - 2012-08-21 15:59

The son is 15 and the arrested one is 16. Maths are all about the numbers..

      peter.kreuger.7 - 2012-08-21 16:09

      @klipkop was 15, is now 16.

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-08-21 16:25

      My money is on Peter.

      rita.jaquire - 2012-08-21 16:36

@klipkop, it was his bithday on the 15 August. That makes him 16 years of age.

      henk63 - 2012-08-21 18:41

The proscecutor timed this one to perfection. Everybody knew this little runt killed his own family because of some stupid disagreement, but could not pin it on the miscreant before he came of age. He should not live to feed on the fruits of the efforts of his parents.

  • elsa.wessels - 2012-08-21 15:51

No big surprize here . . . although I guess we all hoped we may be wrong . . .

      rita.jaquire - 2012-08-21 17:04

@biker. Maybe jealousy? Nothing justify a son murdering his parents!

      riette.nothling - 2012-08-21 18:29

biker, there is no reason or excuse to kill your parents and your sister. that was his own selfishness. A lot of children go through worse every day and don't do this kind of thing!

      tanya.retief - 2012-08-21 19:04

Psychosis and psychopathy are also reasons. Maybe his parents were great. Sometimes people shoot people for no valid reason. (Well, reasons that would be 'valid' to us)

This was bound to be the outcome...sad but true...these things happen!

  • elize12 - 2012-08-21 17:09

Hi Klipkop - the boy turned 16 last week - this is very, very sad indeed

  • lownabester - 2012-08-21 18:06

Well he will not inherit now. I do feel sorry for him, But...........

      henk63 - 2012-08-21 18:44

Problem is, the greedy ANC government wil now claim the estate, since the murderer in the only living beneficiary.

      stiaan.schoeman - 2012-08-22 10:32

WTF. He's got much bigger problems than his inheritance... and nice one for bringing the ANC into this, Henk.

lets hope this is a good lead to the investigation. we want criminals behind bars not suspects.

  • sifiso.msimango - 2012-08-21 21:01

glad this young thug is not black

  • martin.j.bester - 2012-08-21 22:14

I followed this long time ago and was under the impression that parents at the school requested that this boy was not to be accepted back after the incident. Did he therefore go back - if they are talking about a 16 year old boy arrested at the school?

      erica.wessels.7 - 2012-08-22 10:05

      Yes, they allowed him back.
