Missing pregnant woman found dead

2012-03-06 18:52

Bloemfontein - The pregnant woman who disappeared from her Bloemfontein flat about a month ago has been found dead near the city, police said on Tuesday.

Celeste Fraser-Carson, 28, was found buried near the Meadows Road in the Bloemspruit area on Tuesday morning, spokesperson Captain Harry Nagel said.

The discovery followed the arrest of a 30-year-old man, sought by police in the matter, in Graaff Reinet on Monday night, after information was followed up.

Since the arrest police had worked continuously until the body was found. The man took police to Naval Hill and then showed them the place where Fraser-Carson was found.

β€œIt is believed that she was killed on Naval Hill before her body was buried on the embankment,” Nagel said.

A post mortem would attempt to determine the cause of her death and how long she had been buried.

Nagel said the man would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of murder and escaping from custody.

Fraser-Carson's disappearance received prominent attention in the local media.

Photos of the missing mother, expecting her second child, were pinned up all over the city, including at the local magistrate's court.

According to media reports Fraser-Carson, who worked at a local hospital, got into a car outside her flat on February 8 and was not seen again.

Awful news but at least her family might get a little closure.

      Fredster - 2012-03-07 08:20

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS MR PRESIDENT?

  • Jason Children - 2012-03-06 19:25

im sorry if my comment upsets some but bottom line is we live in a sick and twisted society. south africans as a nation are sick and twisted, there are not many places in the world where you can get these headlines, murdered pregnant mothers body found, missing schoolgirl found buried on a beach, suspect charged with 33 rapes appears in court, 3 charged with policemans murder appear in court.......god help us all!

      Se-a Spencer Ikeremm - 2012-03-06 19:37

I am not offended by your comment, I absolutely agree with you.

      Brian - 2012-03-06 21:13

@Abongile: You are quite right. It does happen all over the world. And for thousands of years too. Even that 5000 year old frozen guy they dug up happened to be a murder victim! Shot in the back with an arrow. I guess the issue here in SA as opposed to the rest of the world is that we are quite high (at least in the top 10) in the per capita stats in terms of murder, amongst others nasty stats. We should be much lower, considering what we've achieved.

      Sharon - 2012-03-06 22:59

@ Abongile - When murders and rapes are reported in other countries it is the exception rather than the rule.

      chillip - 2012-03-07 01:26

You are wrong Abongile. I used to think the same thing until I moved to a first world country. yes there is crime but it is NOTHING like in South Africa. You don't realise how bad it is until you are not in it any more.

      Gordon - 2012-03-07 01:47

I am an American writing this, and @Abongile, the SA police force, you can not even compare it to the US police force. Training, funding, infrastructure, technology, manpower. According to various reports, the US has a much lower rape rate than Soouth Africa.

      Bibi - 2012-03-07 07:00

Abongile, yes true. South Africa is however top of the list with most violent crimes and even tops war torn countries. Fact remains that SA has a particular bad problem with regards to murder, armed robberies and rape. That is unfortunately a sad fact and we should stand together and do something about it.

      Carl - 2012-03-07 11:16

Abongile and Brian. You are both examples that gross ignorance exists in the 21st Century. Pregnant woman buried, missing schoolgirl buried on a beach and rapes and murders to the number known in SA only in Iraq or in any other 3rd world country not around in the world as you claim. Maybe the ANC and its supporters should have the balls to admit that this country's morals have gone down the toilet and stop finding scapegoats elsewhere in the world. The time for excuses is over after all these years since 1994. Have the courage to face the enormous problems that exist and stop finding excuses. Death penalty is the only solution and so is the end of ignorance as showed by you both. RIP to those who passed away.

      Laura - 2012-03-06 20:08

'y'all'...sounds like you belong in America

      Gordon - 2012-03-07 01:49

and yes it does.....(this is coming from an american) although that is in our southeastern part........... what we like to call rednecks....... in other words these people hate south africa

  • Marius Lacante - 2012-03-06 20:02

Really, I think the death penalty should be brought back ! These criminals have no right to live !

      robbieyahu - 2012-03-06 21:06

marius wishing for the death penalty is being exactly like these filth .. it will be as if we are doing the same thing ..no difference NADA ...killing one for another ..we can never fix one evil with another evil specially the same thing ..to murdering another human !! BUT DON'T get me wrong ...severe punishment is needed ...CUT OF EVERY RAPIST'S PENIS !!! believe you me rape would stop within days .... if you know you are gonna loose your penis ..any would-be rapist would never considder raping anybody ... but lets start cutting off these penisses !! and for any other offence give them severe wippings daily ...no fancy jail ...just a severe wipping every single day of the sentence ...believe me EVERY PERSON WILL THINK 1000 TIMES BEFORE harming anybody ...nobody wants a wipping for 3 or 4 years long ..each and every single day ..... so lets start pressing for such excellent punishments !!! fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity !! so lets stop shouting to kill other people peace4peace robbie

      Snoopy.zn - 2012-03-07 08:23

Dear Robbie. If you think you have the RIGHT to take someones LIFE, then in return, you as the criminal should pay with your life! Castration of Rapists, I fully agree with, but then again, i would like them to receive the death penalty as well. As the Victims LIFE is RUINED FOREVER!! Rape being comitted against someone is like the death penalty for the victim. You Die Inside. Nothing you dO will ever take away the fear, the momories, OR the pain! NOTHING! KILL THEM ALL! A.K.A - Rape Victim

      misstee.langhein - 2012-10-18 08:57

Problem is Robbie, they get sent to jail for 5 years and then come out on so called "good behaviour" just to go out and rape and kill all over again, if they can take an innocent persons life, without giving a crap, then why shoud us innocent people give a crap about their lives. Ever since the death penalty was taken away, murder and rape stats have shot sky-high!! I say bring back the death penalty, an eye for an eye to the murderers and rapists of this world!!!!

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-03-06 20:53

THe rate at which crime is happening.....soon there will be no victims left.

      Mikkel - 2012-03-06 21:48

      hahaha ! Nice-1

  • Denise Davidson - 2012-03-06 21:43

RIP Celeste, you will be sadly missed at work, being the person you where you certainly did not deserve this,no-one does!!Bring back the death penalty....!!!!No matter what, who has the right to take a life??

I always find it shocking how people have the ability to normalize the amount of crime in their environment. I live in a city of 700,000. Here are my crime stats. In 2011 six murders. Three were domestic incidents, husbands killing wives or parents killing children. One was a bouncer shot by robbers and the other two were some sort of social interaction gone wrong. All are solved. The neighbouring large city has a population of 2.5 million. It had 45 murders. As of Jan 1 65% has been solved, I know they have solved some more since then so the percentage will be higher. That is my normal. Also no burglar guards, front fence, panic button or armed response. I can walk the streets by myself, in the dark, in the city without fear. Do we have some dodgy areas? YES but not many. I feel sorry for you people. To reduce crime you need effective policing and judicial systems. I don't see that happening in your near term future.

      Michelle - 2012-03-07 08:16

Well Steve, you are maybe one of the lucky ones who could leave SA or maybe you never lived here. It is called desensitising and yes, we are in a tragic state of affairs. The only way to solve this is to bring back the death penalty (I know that taking a life makes you just as bad as the original killer) BUT the criminal element of SA have no fear and being sent to prison is like a holiday... 3 meals, bed, tv, water, etc. and hell, you may even get out after a very short sentence SO there is no deterant because there is no respect for anything whatsoever. These criminals need to be gotten rid of permanents. Would be interesting to know what the repeat offender rate is amongst these miserable excuses for human beings.

  • Cristina - 2012-03-07 06:44

    How dreadful!!!!

  • Susan - 2012-03-07 11:01

Fredster, i bet you are expecting an answer from the president because the accused is black, did you forget about the days when whites murdered blacks for fun...

  • Robsschele - 2012-03-07 16:53

Rapists and murderers should be removed from society for a very long period. Then before they are released they should be tested again for their aggressiveness. If they are convicted again on a similar crime, or one of a certain type of crime, they should be put away for life without parole. I think by then he or she will be over 60 years old.

  • angie.rawlinson - 2012-03-07 18:28

I live in a pretty safe Botswana but have many family members and friends living in SA and you know what? EVERY SINGLE ONE of them has been directely affected by violent crime. The worst being my frail 80 year old Father- In-Law being strangled to death and 72 year old Mom-in-Law beaten and left for dead for a couple of bottles of wine and a video machine. Until the problems of vast poverty,Violence in the townships, illegal immigrants from struggling neighbouring countries and overpopulation in South Africa are alleviated there is no solution for the extreme crime level. And we all know there is not much hope of solving those problems either.
