Johannesburg - A 28-year-old man will appear in the Nkandla Magistrate's Court on Thursday on a charge of murder after a missing boy was found dead in the area, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Captain Thulani Zwane said eight-year-old Andiswa Nxumalo was reported missing at Nkandla police station by his parents on 29 September. He had failed to return home after being taken by a man known to him to look for cattle.

"The man returned alone and told Nxumalo's parents he didn't know where the boy was, and said he hadn't seen him," Zwane said.

"The parents became suspicious and reported the boy missing, and when the police took the man in for questioning, he confessed to killing the boy."

The man, who lives in the same homestead as Nxumalo, led the police to a shallow grave in a nearby area where the child's body was found. His throat had been slit.

The motive for the killing is still unclear.
