Missing girl found, stepdad arrested

2012-04-04 09:26
Mbombela - Jacolene Vermeulen, 13, who went missing in Ermelo last Wednesday, was found in Marloth Park near Komatipoort on Tuesday thanks to someone who had read about her disappearance in the newspaper.

The reader saw the front page story about the girl’s disappearance and recognised the girl.

Police were informed that the girl and her stepfather Riaan Roberts, 36, were apparently seen at a pool in Marloth Park on Saturday.

Constable Jaco Steyn of the Ermelo police station’s unit for domestic violence, child protection and sexual offences, had been searching for her since her disappearance last week.

She was last seen at the JJ van der Merwe primary school last Wednesday.

“I took the information given by the Beeld reader and informed my colleagues in the Lowveld and they raided a house in Marloth Park on Tuesday afternoon.”

Roberts was arrested at the house in Vlakvark Street.

The girl was not injured and was placed with child welfare officials.
