Cape Town - The body of a man was recovered on Thursday morning five days after he went missing at a lagoon near George, Western Cape police said.
"Police divers, assisted by members of the National Sea Rescue Institute found and recovered the body of 24-year-old Adriaan Johannes Maree this morning at about 08:45," said Captain Malcolm Pojie.
Pojie said Maree and friends took two boats onto the Swartvlei Lagoon at Pine Lake Marine, Wilderness, near George five days ago.
"Once well into the lake, the man and another male apparently went for a swim. Meanwhile the two boats floated away from them in moderate winds and they tried to swim after the boats.
"One man managed to reach (a boat) while the other man became submerged," said Pojie.
Police divers, rescue dogs and boats were called to assist and finding nothing they were forced to call off the search due to bad light at sunset.
A post morten would be held to ascertain the cause of death and the case would be investigated, Pojie said.
