Johannesburg - A woman who has been missing since April was found dead with her throat cut at a mine shaft in Bekkersdal, Soweto police said on Saturday.

Spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the woman was last seen on 24 April after visiting her boyfriend in Protea Glen, Soweto, driving a BMW.

She had dropped friends off afterwards and drove away, never reaching home.

The alarm was raised and a missing person's case was opened with the police.

The following day her BMW was found abandoned in Protea Glen and the case was changed from missing person to kidnapping.

"Since then we have been looking and searching for the woman," said Makhubela.

Police on Thursday received information about a woman's body found in a mine shaft in Bekkersdal, south west of Johannesburg.

Police went with the 33-year-old woman's family to the government mortuary in Randfontein to see if it may be the missing woman and they identified her body.

Makhubela asked that anybody who might have information to contact the police.
