George - Police and rescuers were searching for a man swept out to sea at Wilderness in the Western Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.

"A police dive unit will continue a search today [Sunday] for a 21-year-old local man, part of a group of missionaries, missing at Wilderness after being swept out to sea by rip currents," spokesperson Craig Lambinon said.

NSRI Wilderness will continue to assist the police.

Lambinon said emergency services were alerted to reports of a drowning in progress at Wilderness Beach on Saturday.

Two 21-year-old Irish men, who are part of a Missionary group, managed to get out of the water unassisted and were treated on the scene for near drowning symptoms and transported to hospital by ambulance for observation.

"It is believed that all three men were swept out to sea by rip-currents. Despite an extensive sea and shore search no sign of a third man, a 21-year-old local man, was found and an ongoing search operation continues," he said.
