Mistaken identity: Cops shot by colleagues

Hillbrow - Two officers were on Monday shot by colleagues while they were in pursuit of a suspect, Eye Witness News (EWN) reported.

The officers, who were in plain clothes, were chasing a suspect in Hillbrow, Johannesburg when their colleagues mistook them for criminals and opened fire.

Both officers who were shot are in a serious condition in hospital.

EWN reported that the suspect had opened fire on police when they approached him in a van.

During the shoot-out, a police constable was shot in the neck by the suspect and later died on the scene.

The plain clothes officers had given chase on foot.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said the suspect was still at large.
