Mixed feelings on Car Free Day

Pretoria - There were mixed feelings from commuters and motorists alike in Pretoria on Thursday regarding Car Free Day.

"This campaign doesn't mean much to me. I take the taxi to town everyday from Mamelodi," said Andile Sithole who works for an insurance company in the city.

Dave Smit, who drives from Silverton, said the campaign was a waste of time and government money.

"I haven't seen a change in the number of cars on the road and I definitely will not take taxis or trains to work. Can you imagine the hassle?"

Molly Ndwatle who travelled to Pretoria from Johannesburg by train described the experience as a marvel.

"It showed me the hardships of people who rely on public transport."

Ndwatle was among a group of people, including South African pop stars, who had taken a train from Johannesburg to join celebrations in Pretoria with Transport Minister Jeff Radebe.

Wang, Worm and Chompa, all members of punk-rock group Finkelsteins, said the two hour train ride was a novel experience.

"It was interesting. We don't do that often," said Wang.

Hip-hop artist Bravo said taking public transport was like a tour.

"We don't know what is really happening with public transport. It's in a real mess."

Student Sibahle Malenga said the initiative was a great idea.

"Look at all the taxis on the road and the people walking and taking the taxis. This proves that Car Free Day can and has worked."

Around the city the flow of traffic seemed unchanged as cars, buses and taxis did their rounds.
