Mob leaves 2 dead in witchcraft attacks

2011-07-05 11:28

Johannesburg - Two people were killed and four others were injured when a mob swooped on two homes in Slovo Park where they believed witchcraft was being practised, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

"No arrests have been made yet but it's a promise that we are going to [make arrests] before sunset," said Lieutenant-Col Mzukisi Fatyela.

Fatyela said a 67-year-old woman sustained severe burns and died when the group set her flat alight in the first incident at 23:30 on Monday.

Her 16-year-old grandson was stabbed but survived the attack while a 6-year-old girl escaped unhurt.

A shack belonging to the woman's 26-year-old son was also set alight. He was not there at the time.

About 30 minutes later, the home of a 62-year-old woman was set alight.

She was stabbed and sustained burns and was in a critical condition in hospital, said Fatyela.

Meanwhile, her 35-year-old son was hacked to death and another son and daughter, aged 25 and 30, were in hospital. One had sustained stab wounds and the other burns.

Five grandchildren escaped unhurt. Their ages were not immediately known.

"Police are at the scene and we will check on the victims in hospital," said Fatyela. "We believe both cases are linked," he said.

Cases of murder, attempted murder and arson had been opened.

MMMMM..... So sad!!! What the hell are these people doing!!!! I am sure there is more to the story. "No arrests have been made yet but it's a promise that we are going to [make arrests] before sunset," said Lieutenant-Col Mzukisi Fatyela. We are holding you to this Promise!!!!

      GTA_Lad - 2011-07-05 12:05

Really?? An what are you going to do when the promise isn't kept? Complain on news24? What an amazing contribution

      liveandlove - 2011-07-05 12:28

Maybe. At least I havent given up on South Africa. What would you do? Keep the hope alive. If one of us do something like complain to the correct channels then nothing will happen. I agree. BUT if thousands keep them to their promise we may just get somewhere.

      PunkBuster - 2011-07-06 15:34

I really think this is silly. Why take someones life for the accusation of witch craft when Sangoma's are a pert of the culture. Same thing isnt it???

Thats why the ANC wants them to have a vote. They can scare them nto voing for the ANC by announcing that they will not go to heaven if they don't vote ANC. Keep them uneducated and illiterate so that you can make up their minds for them.

      johncarlos.biza - 2011-07-05 14:12

Superstition is not particularly related to voting ability. It would be ridiculous to assume Christians vote any less intelligently than atheists. After all, everyone wants a job, affordable food, decent health care, education for their kids and an affordable place to live, regardless of their beliefs. I'm being general here so my comment should not be taken as excusing South Africa's unhealthy voting system

Early iron age to be exact. Thats the state the settlers found them in when they arrived in Africa.

      Flee - 2011-07-05 12:33

Agree. I sometimes wonder what barbarians we have in our society.. what puzzles me though is ask one of these attackers to give you a clear definition between this "witchcraft" and what sangoma's do?? bet you they dont know... but they believe in this crud... the tokolosh, spirits and eating the reproductive organs of offspring that have come from their own loins...WHAT FRIKKING SAVAGES!!!

      WarGod - 2011-07-05 13:11

@Worldwise and Michaelx The Bantu/Nguni were Iron Age, rather than stone age. The now-extinct Khoisan and extant San were in fact Late Stone Age. Incidentally, Africa skipped the Bronze Age, primarily because of a lack of usable copper ore, although ironically, there is a northern African tribe that made exclusively copper weaponry, so theoretically a copper age existed in Northern Africa.

  • Judith - 2011-07-05 11:59

If I read the last line of this article correctly it states that cases of murder, attempted murder and arson were opened - it does not state cases of witchcraft!

      Worldwise - 2011-07-05 12:33

@ Judith. Witchcraft is not illegal, neither is Satanism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism nor any other superstition, religion or belief, no matter how absurd. A person cannot be prosecuted for their beliefs. Only illegal actions resulting from such beliefs can be prosecuted. If you could prosecute someone for witchcraft you could prosecute them for Christianity as they are both based on unprovable superstitious beliefs. Remember the Spanish inquisition? One group believing superstitious Christian beliefs murdered and tortured persons suspected of believing in the superstition of witchcraft.

      Flee - 2011-07-05 12:45

Cause there is no such frikkin thing.... These idiots have been brainwashed by years of stories and lies that their lives can be hexed by some gerbil crapping 6 meters downwind from their left shoe if it lies at a 6 degree angle to the doorstep... PLEASE!!!...

      Susannomore - 2011-07-06 13:39

Judith - people have the right to believe in what they want. There is nothing illegal about so-called witchcraft. And the people who murdered and burnt down homes were not practicing the so-called witchcraft. They were practicing murder and arson. No read again, slowly...

      montecristo - 2011-07-06 13:41

Worldwise, interesting and informative post, except that Christianity is certainly not an unprovable superstitious belief. That Christ existed is irrefutable.

Witches are not responsible for muti murders. Rogue Traditional healers are!

      Kate - 2011-07-05 12:33

Thank you for keeping the rest of the world aware of the situation in Africa. This is horrible! It perpetuates an image of Africans being uneducated, ignorant and blood-thirsty. Why does the government round up these murderers? They aren't doing the Will of God by killing children and elderly people...They ARE, however, attempting to REPLACE God and be the final Judge of others. The Bible very plainly states that God hates those who twist his words for personal gain and will deal with them. It shows me that the murderers don't really believe in what the Bible or God says...because they are their own God.

      Worldwise - 2011-07-05 12:43

Wanna know whats sad? 1. Children have been orphaned 2. Families have been left without shelter. 3. People feel Super Human and therefore they feel that they own the rights somebody else's life. 4. Whats sad is that somebody somewhere sits and devises a plan on how he / she / they will kill old women and children. 5. Whats sad is the lack of education in these communities... People practicing withcraft are convinced that they are right in what they're doing! They have absolute faith in their activities. 6. The communities EXPECT not to be held accountable for these horrid killings! 7. MY BIGGEST GRIPE - IS THAT THESE UNEDUCATED SAVAGES AND I HAVE ONE AND THE SAME VOTE!!! 8. When I say "savages" I speak about those who practice witchcraft AND the murderers!!!

      Pickle - 2011-07-05 12:50

What witches do and what sangoma's do is NOT the same thing. Educate yourself about the craft and you will very quickly see that it's not about slaughtering live children for muti or throwing bones to tell your future...

  • Kate - 2011-07-05 12:25

Stop all this senseless killing- the rest of the world is appalled at the insensitivity and brutality taking place in Africa. The witch hunters are getting rich off of fear and ignorance. The government could do something to stop this. Right now Africa looks like a place filled with ignorance and being over run by fundamentalist religious lunatics. Jesus would weep because so many are being murdered in his name.

      Susannomore - 2011-07-06 13:42

How does being murdered for witchcraft amount to being murdered in Jesus's name? There is not one word about God, Jesus or Christianity in the article. Please don't jump to conclusions. These people could be Muslim, Jewish, or simply don't like people practicin witchcraft!?

  • ndze - 2011-07-05 12:38

While violence cannot be condoned we must accept that witchcraft is there. I used to deny that but what happened on Sunday made me to think twice. I was from a circumsion ceremony at my parent's home. The first night I slept at my place I woke up at about midnight. I stayed in bed for about thirty minutes. I decided to pass urine. My wife was asleep at the time. I saw two people sitting on the pedestal next to my wife. It was a male and a female.I became angry and tried to kick them. but they vanished into thin air. After two minutes they resurfaced and I went for them. My wife was awake by then and they vanished as I was attacking them. So I cannot say witchcraft doesn't exist but I don't know how to go about curbing it.

      Hantie Jansen van Vuuren - 2011-07-05 12:49

It's a serious problem. The only way to curb this witchcraft is to throw away the booze and dagga.

O find your prejudice glaringly ignorant of the facts, and insulting to both Witches and the victims of this horrible attack. Shame on you! Where is your Christian charity? I see only hatred of the other. We must condemn witch-hunts as barbaric brutality, not find reason to justify violence against others.

Damon, F@kdup appears to have major anger issues and possibly a repressed homosexual experience in his past. Many straight men have these experiences but write them off to experience caused by raging teenage hormones and live well balanced lives thereafter. Some people have everlasting guilt resulting in agressive, beligerent and arrogant behaviour fueled by a fundamentalist religious bias. Anyone recognise themselves?

  • Ann - 2011-07-05 14:39

@VAKTAP - no wonder the world is in such a mess. The bible also says "to love thy neighbour, like you love yourself", "let you who is without sin throw the first stone", "take the log out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter from the eye of your brother", plus many more - perhaps you should try reading some positive passages sometime. Perhaps we should be revisiting the McCarthy era, if your type has anything to say with it. These were people who were loved by others, people with flesh and blood and tears and laughter who will be missed by their loved ones. Your very thoughts are evil and sinful. Until we actually learn tolerance and love for one-another, this world will continue to see lunatics like you expounding hatred and making the people of the world suffer even more. God made all humans out of love and that is what He tries to teach - not the vile musings of a hare-brained racist and purist such as yourself! Learn to love others and yourself - take a look in the mirror and see the gnarled reflection you portray!! And NO, I am not a Bible puncher, I just believe in treating others as I would want to be treated.

      Worldwise - 2011-07-06 13:08

You may not be a bible puncher but you do believe in a mythical being and imaginary friend you call God.

If the Police Force cannot act on phone calls; which they do not do; people are going to take matters in their own hands. All you get is a number to report your case; I have reported stolen cars outside my home; I know the neighbours were dealing in stealng goods and in the middle of the night all these goods will be delivered; the car was there for 2 weeks and the until today the police never reacted. This is now nearly a year later and the neighbours have moved out. Stop employing criminals in the Police Force and make sure they all have a drivers license; check out their CV. They also should have a legal matric; fire the Minister of Correctional Services as she is no good letting criminals out. Get the President to stop travelling to other countries and sort out the problems in his own country.
