Model man dies while trying to save dog

2012-07-24 08:47

Cape Town - A Swellendam woman watched in horror as her boyfriend was hit by a train after he tried to save a dog on the railway lines.

Die Burger reported that the woman and her 21-year-old boyfriend had gone for a walk with the dog, which belonged to a friend, when the dog started running on the railway track between the Du Toit and Koelenhof stations.

The man, who is a professional model from Cape Town, was hit by the train and his body was dragged for 500m.

The dog also died.

The woman, who was in a state of shock, was brought to a police station for treatment.

The victim could not be identified as his family had not yet been informed of his death.

The train driver was also traumatised and placed on immediate sick leave and four trains were delayed as a result of the incident.

He was a hero....my deepest condolence to his family

      chris.cunning.14 - 2012-07-24 10:39

I agree with Nosiphom. I can see everyone's disgust with the thumbs down. But you don't chase a dog sorry. You keep it on a lead and make sure it doesn't get away. You never jump in front of a train to save it. As much as we all LOVE our pets.

      renier.myburgh - 2012-07-24 10:58

How can he be called a hero if the dog died anyway?

      preshen.govender.90 - 2012-07-24 15:11

It’s a dog eat dog world

  • tito.ndlovu.5 - 2012-07-24 09:33

the way I know news24 readers, comments for this story will soon turn racial and people will start attacking each other. you wanna bet?

      Mzamo - 2012-07-24 09:44

I think we have to come to terms with the fact that as people we are different, so as our priorities. We were created differently. So, if other people can die for a dog......let it be! Its their choice!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-24 10:07

So Mzamo came to the party! Truth is Mzamo, not all black people don't care for animals, same as not all white people care for animals. But ja, the truth also is - you CAN generalise. Sad ... that intelligent creatures like human beings can have no compassion for other creatures ... then again, look at all the child and woman abuse in this country ... research indicates a strong link between animal and child abuse, its all about an attitude of not caring or having compassion for that which is "weaker" than you. Nothing to be proud of dudes.

      Mzamo - 2012-07-24 10:37

@Chum - There are things that we just have to accept as they are because we can't change them. Blacks do not hate animals, but they just don't have passion for them like you do (and everyone has to accept that). We don't have to justify why we don't have passion for them, so as you, you don't have to justify why you have passion for them! Its just in our nature, that's all. So I don't understand how you link women / child abuse to animal abuse / cruelty. According to me these are totally different matters, unless you prove otherwise.

      chris.cunning.14 - 2012-07-24 10:44

Stupid dude, you brought it up. So ironically YOU ARE THOSE READERS.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-24 13:44

Mzamo, do some research, there is a strong link between animal and child abuse. And you're still generalising on behalf of black people - do you have that right? And hey, tito - we're discussing an issue, not attacking one another ....

  • TheyTookMyNickLaZynEko - 2012-07-24 09:34

This is why you walk a dog ON A LEASH.

      Lunga - 2012-07-24 10:43

Leash? Sheesh! A man is dead here. Have some respect.

  • James - 2012-07-24 09:34

Why would you walk a dog without a leash?

      afrikeni - 2012-07-24 10:52

You know the animal lovers say, "My pet does not behave like that". It's an animal with the noise of a train and a dog not on a leash, what a bad combination.

  • JohnDough - 2012-07-24 09:41

If he was perpared to risk his life to save an animal it shows that he was a real human with a real heart. May he R.I.P.

  • ashika.ajudia - 2012-07-24 10:06

walking a dog near train tracks really now, obviously the dog is going to run between tracks with all the noise. and no leash?

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-07-24 10:07

Very sad, but please let this be a lesson to all here, That when you take your dog out for a walk, please for your safety and his put him on a leash.

  • venus.sharma.5205 - 2012-07-24 10:09

These are direct results of people having so much love for animals than other human race....beware! Dogs kill too!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-24 13:37

How on earth do you link a love of animals to a hatred of humans?

  • king.k.zee - 2012-07-24 10:35

well.... Life is not a romantic movie guy, sad story, but dude is DUMB as hell. Really though, a TRAIN??? throw a rock or something. and the dog dies aswel?! *smh* RIP and condolances.

  • joanita.esterhuyse - 2012-07-24 12:10

It is sad to say that he had to die in sch a manner and in front of his girlfriend so my condolences to his family, but true to say that he was a idiot for running after that dog, but hey who are we to judge him, it was his decision after all!!!!!

      Lloyd Grobler - 2013-05-30 01:43

Joanita , it takes a BIG idiot to recognize another idiot... Who gives anybody to judge or label others??? Eckart grew up infront of me and the truth is , he was such a great soul with a big heart...big enough to risk his own life for an animal!!!

  • dupreez.leandri - 2012-07-24 14:02

nobody was there, nobody can say what exactly happened, and nobody has the right to judge him, how many people these days die during an act of goodness? He was clearly a beautiful person inside and out. Thinking of the family, and may you rest in peace...

It's sad to see that people have no respect anymore. Calling someone an Idiot and all kinds of bad names is rude! Sorry for them but it was irresponsible of them to be walking the dog off leash! Big Mistake! Personaly not even I can take my dogs out for a walk in my own neighbourhood due to irresponsible so called animal lovers who allow their dogs to run around freely off leash! All that is needed is, for their dog to come up to mine & sniff them & hey presto! One hell of a dog fight is going to break out whereby as the animal lover that I am, out of automatism I will dive right into the dog fight without thought to rescue my dog/s and without a medical aid just who do you think is going to pay for my injuries? Sorry for the dog who did not have the "human logic".. Humans have it! People who walk their dogs off leash are totally inconsiderate to the needs of others & should be heavily fined! Immagine a child out innocently walking their dog & an unleashed dog ends up attacking both child together with dog? Responsible adults who know better & might I add, they all know better! ..Will not unleash their dog because they know their are risks & consequences that can come with it!

To all you other 'idiots' who commented on how Eckardt died and did'nt know him, get something better to do. It's tragic but those who knew him would know why he tried to save the dog. Remember him for the gentle, kind, funny, creative, friendly and lovable person he was. We all loved u.

  • Hemlock - 2012-08-23 15:27

This is so sad. Condolences to his family and loved one. RIP

  • sharon.houghton.984 - 2012-09-07 11:27

What a wonderful man to think about trying to save the dog without any thought for himself. Such humantiy, something we see little of today. So sad he and the dog were both killed and sincere sympathies to his girlfriend. May they RIP.

"The woman, who was in a state of shock, was brought to a police station for treatment." Didn't know police stations were capapble of that.
