Johannesburg - North West Premier Thandi Modise wished South Africans on Wednesday well over Christmas and New Year's Day.

"We wish everyone a merry Christmas and a joyous new year during which we will, together in our diversity, raise our banners to rejoice the second decade of our freedom and democracy," she said in a statement.

Modise said 2013 would forever be memorable because it took South Africans "to depths of sorrow we had never experienced as a nation".

"When despair knocked on our door with the loss of the greatest freedom fighter, world icon and founding father of our nation, former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, we remembered from the lessons we have learnt from none other than the colossal Madiba himself...," she said.

"[We learnt]... that our long walk to freedom had been higher than hope and that despite temporary setbacks, great victories still lie ahead for our people."

Mandela died at his Houghton home, in Johannesburg, on December 5. He was buried in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, on December 15.
