Mom dies, boy critical after crash

2010-10-02 14:34
Johannesburg - A woman was killed and her son was critically injured in an accident in Vanderbijlpark, south of Gauteng, emergency personnel said on Saturday.

"A mother is dead and her 12-year-old son is in a critical condition in hospital after the vehicle they were in rolled several times on the Rusticana road in Vanderbijlpark this morning [at about 09:30]," said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

He said it was unclear what caused the accident but when paramedics arrived on the scene they found the mother and son lying outside the vehicle.

The mother was declared dead on the scene and the boy sustained leg and critical head injuries.

Shortly after the accident the father arrived on the scene and was "beside himself".

The boy was airlifted to Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.
