Johannesburg - Two policemen saved a newborn baby girl and helped her mother on Tuesday, North rand police said.
Spokesperson Superintendent Eugene Opperman said the officers, detective inspector Ntuseni Phlandwa and detective sergeant Ditjutle Molepo from the Midrand police station, were on routine patrol on Tuesday.
They saw a pregnant woman reeling in pain on the side of the road.
They stopped their car to help and discovered that she was in an advanced stage of giving birth. They put her in their car and rushed to Carstenhof Clinic.
Despite the rush the baby was born in the back of the police car.
Molepo, married with three children of his own, saw that the baby was not breathing. He saw that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck. He hastily loosened it and the girl started to breath and cry.
Molepo wrapped the baby girl in his jacket to keep her warm and safe.
Phlandwa said that he had never driven under such difficult circumstances.
Both mother and child were handed over to medical personnel at the clinic. Both were transferred to Thembisa hospital where they were reportedly doing well.
