Cape Town - A Cape Town mother was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after she handed her baby boy to a stranger in a minibus taxi four days ago, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Cape Times reported that the 29-year-old woman was taken into custody on Tuesday after her six-month-old baby, Ngcwele, was found the same day at a state safe house for women and children in Khayelitsha.

She had handed her baby to a commuter as she tried to board a taxi on Friday, but before she could get in the doors closed and the taxi drove off.

"The child is unharmed, has been for a medical check and is in good care," police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said.

He said a woman in the taxi had brought the baby to the police station.

Social development MEC Albert Fritz reportedly sent social workers to visit the mother's house after reading media reports about the missing baby.
