Mom hides newborn under basin
Johannesburg - A mother was arrested after her newborn baby was found under a basin at her home in Springbokpan, near Itsoseng, North West police said on Thursday.
"A 24-year-old woman was arrested and faces charges of attempted murder after she gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday and put her under a zinc washing bath," Captain Pelonomi Makau said.
In the early hours of Monday morning, police responded to a call from the woman's aunt who found a baby girl wrapped in a sack when she went to do laundry, Makau said.
The woman apparently gave birth without the knowledge of her family members. She told her aunt that she had a miscarriage and was taken to the hospital.
After the mother's discharge, she was arrested and confessed to police that poverty drove her to the crime.
She will appear in the Itsoseng Magistrate's Court on Thursday for a formal bail application.
The baby was taken to a hospital for treatment and observation.
