Mom 'lied about cause of son's death'

2011-01-21 11:07

Durban - The body of a man will be exhumed in Nongoma after it emerged his mother allegedly lied about the cause of his death, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

“The mother told the police that the boy was struck by firecrackers, but it has since emerged that she lied,” said Colonel Thembeka Mbhele.

On Christmas day, two brothers, aged 24 and 26, were playing music and lighting firecrackers at their Nongoma home when a fight broke out.

“One of them allegedly struck his brother with a radio speaker on the head. The mother allegedly decided to lie to the police to protect her son from being arrested for the murder,” she said.

The woman, 66, hurriedly organised the funeral.

Wound

“We have been told that they did not even use a casket to bury him because they were in a hurry.”

Mbhele said the police were alerted by people who attended the funeral, who said the fatal wound did not look it had been caused by a firecracker.

“We have arrested both the alleged killer and the mother. The boy is charged for murder and the mother for defeating the ends of justice.”

Both were expected to apply for bail in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

How absolutely sad. I can't fault the mother for trying to save her surviving son - even though her actions are regrettable and ill thought through. What do to: lose both sons or try to save one at least? Maybe the motive will explain more..

I agree. When something like this happens, should they be prosecuted(mother and son) or should it be a family matter-if it is proved that it was an accident?

How does KZN function? I thought death certificate will only be issued after the DR certify someone dead. Are this areas still that rural?

Who said anything about a death certificate Sematsatsa, he died, they buried him, end of story, or at least so they thought.

Blackpride,it would have been the end of story if she believed in cremation.

The very least that should have happened would have been to call the Police once the boy died - old people frequently die of natural causes (i.e. old age), adolescents not. Whether firecrackers or a whack to the head, neither qualifies as "death from natural causes" & therefore would require the SAPF to get involved. Very odd indeed...

Murderers get out in 6 months,so they'll do a month and be out.A habititual criminal stole my wallet and cards( I was one of 12 victims) she was sentenced to 4 years (It was the 4th time she had been caught) she was out in 3 weeks because "they needed the space".

"The mother told the police that the boy was struck by firecrackers, but it has since emerged that she lied". So the police initially believed her. Did they not bother to investigate ? They needed the public to tell them that something is wrong with the mother's story. Is it that easy to get away with murder ?

      murphy - 2011-01-21 21:32

Apparently the police in KZN are that stupid, yes. Law says all unnatural deaths should be investigated by a coroner before the body is released to the family for burial.
