Pretoria - The mother of a 5-year-old boy who was kidnapped during a hijacking almost a week ago said she was overjoyed that her son had been found unharmed, a report said on Monday.

Mongezi Phike’s mother, Lizzie, said she was contacted by police around midnight with information that a boy who fitted her son’s description had been found in Johannesburg, Pretoria News reported.

Mongezi was kidnapped last Tuesday by hijackers who assaulted his father, Aaron, and left him for dead.

The father is still recovering in hospital.

The little boy said he wasn’t afraid during the ordeal and only wanted his siblings and family.

The kidnappers left Mongezi at a mall on Saturday and fled. He told a woman at the mall what happened and she contacted the police who took him to Childcare.

While at the shelter, he saw his mother on the evening news and told one of the caregivers who she was.

The mother said she was very grateful that her son had been found unharmed and thanked the community for helping to look for him.
