Johannesburg - A mother from Florida on the West Rand has told how she resigned from her job to investigate her son's death last year in a car accident which was allegedly caused by a police official.
This week, Michelle Harris hopes that the court will deliver a verdict and end the case, which has been dragging on for more than a year.
Her 20-year-old son, Kyle, who was working as a dental technician, died in the accident in Hillfox, Roodepoort, in June last year.
One of the cars in a VIP police convoy driving to Pretoria collided with his red Toyota Tazz.
Constable Johannes Ramalope of the VIP unit in Pretoria was charged with culpable homicide.
He denied guilt, according to police spokesperson Inspector Karen Jacobs.
Sleepless nights
Michelle Harris said on Sunday that she had resigned from her job as a private banker at Nedbank so that she could focus on the investigation into her son's death.
She said she had visited the scene a week after the accident, had spoken to the driver of the tow truck, and gave details of witnesses to the police.
Harris also twice visited assistant commissioner Oswald Reddy, area commander of the greater Roodepoort area.
"I still have nights where I can't sleep," she said on Sunday. "I want to see justice done."
Harris said what drove her to actively research and follow up her son's accident was that she didn't want another family to go through what they had gone through.
The trial continues in the Roodepoort Regional Court on Monday.
Jacobs said the State would probably close its case on Monday.
