Cape Town - A Cape Flats teenager has told how his mother was shot dead in front of him and his six siblings.

Elsabe Petersen, 42, was cooking in her kitchen at about 20:00 on Monday evening when she heard gunshots, the Daily Voice reported.

Worried about her daughter who had just been sent to the shops, Petersen went outside to look for her. The next moment she collapsed and came crawling back into the house, covered in blood.

A devastated Bronwin Petersen, 18, described how he tried to stop the bleeding and covered her with a blanket as his stepfather held her.

“I ran to our neighbour and asked them to call an ambulance… By the time police arrived, she was already gone.”

Petersen’s youngest child is only 3.

Cape Town police say a 30-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder.
