Pretoria - A woman who was attacked by a trio of robbers minutes after dropping her son off at school tried calling for help but was unable to speak on the phone after they shot her in the face.
Ronél van Eyk, 46, was shot three times, and one of the bullets hit her in the face, reported Beeld.
As she lay bleeding near the farm gate in Hartbeesfontein in the North West, she tried calling a neighbour, Jurie Fourie.
Fourie said he was eating breakfast when his phone rang just after 08:00.
“It was Ronél. She was just making sounds. I called back and the cellphone rang. Ronél picked it up and again just made choking sounds.”
Fourie and a friend rushed to the farm where they found Van Eyk, still alive, at the gate. They called for help but Van Eyk died on the way to hospital.
Van Eyk’s husband, Fred, was not at home at the time. Their eldest son, Nardus, 21 was in Johannesburg for training.
“It’s very hard on Freddie. He doesn’t understand and misses her already,” said Nardus of his younger brother Freddie, 9.
The robbers got away with Van Eyk’s car, which was later found deserted near Coligny.
