Mom wants answers after son killed

2012-05-16 10:47

Cape Town - A Cape Town mother has angrily asked the police to explain why police officers are allowed to walk around “armed with guns and ready to kill us”.

This came after her son, Mbulelo Wele, 24, was shot dead by a jealous policeman who also shot and wounded his ex-lover, Nontombi April, 18, before shooting himself, reported the Daily Voice.

April is fighting for her life in hospital.

She had apparently broken up with Constable Mcedisi Magalakanqa, 32, some time ago.

On the day of the shooting, the policeman got into an argument with April and her new boyfriend (Wele), returning with a gun a few hours later. He kicked in the door and shot them both.

“I don’t understand how any of this happened and why the police are allowed to walk around armed with guns ready to kill us,” says Nocawe Wele, Mbulelo’s mother.

Mbulelo left behind two children and was the breadwinner at home.

it is legal- she's not considered a minor...

      Tinky - 2012-05-17 08:15

@Kirsten - It is legal but not necessarily morally correct! Most 18 year olds are still in school, they are children!!

And as usual, nothing will happen. the ANC has certainly "transformed" the SAPS. from a well functioning crime fighting organization to a bunch of corrupt and violent morons. even the claim that the "old regime" police was brutal and totured people no longer stands as these thugs are more violent. they torture, commit any type of crime (12 HAWKS accused of murder etc) and have no sense of public duty whatsoever. the the 10 cops (in the whole country) that are not corrupt and do your duty, you have my apologies.

      rypstra - 2012-05-16 12:13

police used to have to go through a 4 year detective course to get thier guns - today its 6 months. Go figure.

THIS IS VERY SAD - BUT OUR COUNTRY'S CRIMINALS ARE SO MANY AND SO DANGEROUS, WE HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO ARM THEM. HOWEVER, OUR POLICE ARE JUST AS DANGEROUS AND OUT OF HAND LATELY - COMES FROM A GOVERNMENT THAT IS ROTTEN FROM THE CORE. DIFFICULT TIMES WE ARE CURRENTLY LIVING IN HERE IN S.A.

  • jomardl - 2012-05-16 16:28

Quite right, for a million obvious reasons off-duty cops should NOT be allowed to carry firearms. Most of the weapons in the hands of criminals originated with the police and military - whose weapons are supposed to protect us.

Does SAPS do psychological evaluations on a regular basis? Just curious. I know their admission exams used to contain some kind of psychological evaluation in the late 80's.
