Moms upset after rugby tour initiation

2011-04-12 09:49

Pretoria – New members of the Wonderboom High School's rugby first team in Pretoria apparently underwent initiation during a rugby tour in which they were stripped almost naked, hit with plastic pipes and had to drink a concoction allegedly containing urine.

Their hair and eyebrows were also apparently shaved off.

The seven boys were also blindfolded, Deep Heat was smeared on their eyes and they were dragged around on the ground in their underwear while they were sworn at.

A mother told on Monday that her son had said: "Mommy, some of the boys cried and others threw up after they drank the concoction." Her son said it contained urine.

This mom and two other mothers who spoke to reporters, asked to remain anonymous. They also had to promise their children that they wouldn't lay official charges.

The boys were apparently initiated by senior members of the school's rugby first team during their first rugby tour.

They left on March 31 to play rugby in Beaufort-West in the Western Cape and returned on April 6.

"My child has been hurt. One of the teachers on tour apparently had to treat some of the boys at one stage. My child is traumatised," told another mother.

One of the mothers wrote an anonymous letter to the school in which she complained.

She said according to her son they were hit with plastic pipes on the back, hands and buttocks.

"I wanted to complain, but my child made me promise that I wouldn't do it. I just rubbed ointment where I could."

Principal Dr Faan van Wyk said upon enquiry they immediately started investigating the matter on Monday after receiving an anonymous letter from a parent.

"We called in all of the boys before they could talk to each other and asked that every one wrote down how they experienced the tour."

"All of them wrote that they decided themselves to shave off their hair. They wrote they were not forced to do it and that the tour was fun. They wrote that they shaved off their hair to build team spirit and that they had a good time laughing at one another. The letters were consistent and I was quite relieved but now we have heard of the other allegations, we won't let the matter rest there.

"We regard the allegations in a serious light. Initiation is unacceptable."

Here goes another 4 years of indepth investigations and mud slinging and Admissions and denials and wotnot. Just hope that some of those initiated were the same colour as the rest or the human rites, Sorry, rights council will also have to step in and proclaim with ceremonies and fanfare: It was all Apartheid.

      daaivark - 2011-04-12 10:28

      you mean "rights".

      Badgerspoon - 2012-03-12 21:03

Look, I've been through initiation several times at certain times in my life and some of this stuff is obviously made up. They mention they "apparently" shaved off their eyebrows - did they or didn't they? Secondly, I don't know which high school first team rugby player still uses "mommy" and thirdly, if you drink something after someone explicitly told you it contains urine and seeing other okes puke, then you deserve all the misfortunes life can throw at you.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-05-10 09:51

It's about time kids sucked it up. Big deal, it has happened for years and years. Grow a pair.

      Benita - 2012-05-11 11:36

Oh I'm sure you become a real "man" by being beaten with a plastic pipe and shaved.... And some of us also think to hit someone shows how strong you are, or to rape someone because you can, makes you "the man in the team". Poor Will99, some of us will never get it, will we?

      Viparo - 2011-04-12 11:20

Chill KD - no need for insults. Go and youtube "harden the fu#k up". You'll see it was meant as a joke. I think it's time you deal with your past and confront whomever bullied you. Time to move on man.

      coonpsycho - 2011-04-12 11:51

@ Kd, try Deepheat on your balls, on your 0 ring and if they cant get to it your head if you know what i mean... doesn't matter how bad initiation gets, think of this there are people who constantly live with worse things, this is only tough love. but KD i understand if you can't handle it, poor cry baby.

  • Welleducated - 2011-04-12 10:11

I suppose if any of the boys were non-white, they will claim "RACISM" and it will appear in International media, it will become a politcial issue and hell will break lose for the school and the pupils, but if the boys are white, then it will just be the "initiation". Lets hope the boys were white so that the ANC back off this one!! Racist politicians.

      daaivark - 2011-04-12 10:29

Nobody is treating this as a racial issue except some misguided readers.

You're not seriously waving the race card around?

  • VuyosWors - 2011-04-12 10:11

So what? When I was at high school in the early 80's we went through similar stuff and never ran home to tell mommy! Not to mention what we endured in the army! Kids nowdays are over-protected poofs.

      daaivark - 2011-04-12 10:30

And aren't you just the man now.

@ThaTruth I was the bully chop.

      ThaTruth - 2011-04-12 12:30

@VuyoWors: In your initial post you mentioned that you "went through similar stuff" as the boys being initiated, now you're saying that you were the "bully". Make up you're mind....If I'm a chop, then you're a liar...

      ThaTruth - 2011-04-12 12:31

Thank Rudolf Straeuli for this. This is what is known as the "watered down version of Kamp Staaldraad". Parents, stand by for your boys pissing blood. However, for no apparent reason or purpose.

  • thakaali - 2011-04-12 10:15

This will continue happening no matter what anyone does. I attended a prominent Afrikaans university, and went through initiation at the female residence I lived in, resulting in a horrible first year. Despite engaging with various levels of university management, providing relevant documentation and forming a lobby group of sorts, initiation continues. There are better ways to carry on traditions than by forcing those boys to drink pee and beating them!!! My fiance went through initiation at another Afrikaans university, and when he transferred to mine, refused to go through it again. As a result, he was ostracised and is known as "The Ghost" in res because he refuses to take part in anything. I empathise with those boys, because they were obviously told that they would not be part of the team if they did not go through the barbaric initiation.

  • David - 2011-04-12 10:16

Initiation is passed down from generation to generation of school kids in sport, my son endured it for rugby and cricket, i endured it, i know of schools that stopped initiation and the kids just changed the rules by making the new kids so drunk that they embarrassed themselves anyway.

      ChrisG - 2011-04-12 10:39

I notice how it's always the moms that complain about it. Fathers never say anything because like you said, we've all experienced it through the generations. Rather just take it like a man.

      ThaTruth - 2011-04-12 13:02

@ChrisG - The reason why the Mothers complain is because fathers aren't MAN enough to protect their children. Many children commit suicide because of bullies and these inhumane initiation practices...Fathers should rather stand up for their children 'like men'

      Derrick - 2011-04-12 15:58

@ThaTruth - I don't think it's a matter of protecting ones kids. Initiation happens, look having deep heat rubbed in eyes and drinking pee is something else, but I actually think those are made up lies. Most commented on how they enjoyed it, then suddenly the other things came up. If it's really such a problem, call in sick or make up some excuse to miss the event. Cancer shave-a-thon is all a good cause, I seriuosly doubt the chick at work who did it wanted to as a fashion statement.

  • AcesHigh - 2011-04-12 10:17

I wonder what today's mothers would have done when their sons went off to basic training in the old SADF? I say harden the f*ck up! But yes, the urine thing was out of line

      WillowI - 2011-04-12 10:32

They were blindfolded - and alledgedly the concoction contained urine - I doubt that there was urine involved - probably heard a sound like 'p@#@in' and assumed it was urine (it is easy to make a concoction that tastes that bad). The drinks we used to concoct for bachelors parties probably tasted worse than urine - but with the Reitz 4 it became such a big story (and was still never proved - even in court - mass hysteria comes to mind)

      burtfred - 2011-04-12 10:52

I went through years of military training in the SADF, and never once did we practice "initiation" ceremonies. We certainly were stressed physically in our training routines and we were regularly sworn at by the PF's, but I never witnessed actual assault. It is no achievement to beat and humiliate your juniors. @AcesHigh - do you have small penis syndrome? Why do you have to publicly prove your so-called masculinity? "Initiation" ceremonies are just so ancient history and have no place in modern democratic society.

  • WITBUL - 2011-04-12 10:21

This is everything that is wrong with society at present, no balls and always a sense of entitlement. In my days initiation was far worse than described above and we took it like men! We understood that tradition and earning your rite of passage into a school or team went along with some hardships and in the end you will be better for it. Man the hell up!! Who calls their mother "mommy" when you are in highschool??

      KD - 2011-04-12 10:43

You clearly come from an unevolved place where this sort of pathetic behaviour is deemed 'manly'. Its pathetic and unnecessary. Is it having a sense of entitlement to not want to drink pee or have deep heat rubbed in your eyes. What is wrong with society at present, is that there are neanderthals like yourself, that condone, even praise this sort of barbarism. A real man, would never do something like this.

      Gary - 2011-04-12 10:55

I agree 100%........I remember back in the day when matrics initiated the std 6's for the first month and we got hell handed to us.......boys today need to act like boys.

  • neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:22

Why is it always so homo-erotic? It seems like these things bring out latent homosexual tenancies in people.

      daaivark - 2011-04-12 10:32

      WHAT??

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:39

*tendencies. Come on! rubbing deep heat on naked boys, beating them with pipes, smacking boy's bums, everyone naked in a dark hole (kamp staal-draad or whatever). Drinking each other's pee. WTF, is it a gay porn movie or what?

      ChrisG - 2011-04-12 10:40

If you find "almost naked" guys homo-erotic then I hope you were banned from the changeroom.

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:46

It is homoerotic, when you lead a bunch of boys to run around in a field, almost (or completely naked as in some cases) for no reason whatsoever. I would be banned from a change room if I did that to boys. I would probably be arrested if I tried to spank their bums. I would be vilified if I made a whole lot of men sit naked in the mud for nothing other my my sick little perversions.

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:47

Also you don't usually make boys drink each others piss in the changerooms for your own jollies.

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:51

"BOYS - it is time to rub deepheat on your balls." - no tendencies at all?? Haha.

      HUH ..... ?? ........ say WHAT ???

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 10:58

Think about it. The teachers and coaches that you trust with your kids actually just want to roger them.

      neonpigeon - 2011-04-12 11:35

google "homoerotic elements in initiation ceremonies". You weren't been toughened up into a man. You were been softened and groomed as a potential boy-toy. Enjoy your nightmares manne!

  • malusi01 - 2011-04-12 10:22

ag shame, hope they survive this terrible ordeal and dont become misfits in society...

  • Say It - 2011-04-12 10:24

Let’s ask the boys in 20 years what they then think of their experience during the tour… We are slowly taking away life lessons and experiences from our kids and limiting them to non-social activities like TV-games and not giving them the opportunity to develop life skills they will need when they are adults

      daaivark - 2011-04-12 10:33

So this was a valuable life-lesson was it? What precisely was being taught?

      Say It - 2011-04-12 10:56

Is it at all possible that these boys knew what playing rugby for the first team entailed, i.e. initiation and that they had to choose between the negatives and the positives and accept that if they are to experience the positives they will have to endure the negatives? The boys are most likely between 17 and 19 years old, big enough to realise what they were letting themselves in for. As adult one has to make various decisions in the workplace or at home that may require weighing up the negatives against the positives. Strange how everyone just accepts the press statement “had to drink a concoction allegedly containing urine” as gospel….

      Jenna - 2011-04-12 11:08

daaivark, I think....lesson that live is not always fair, you will be humiliated, you will come across some idiots, the only thing you have control over is your attitude - ?

So we should look the other way and chalk it down to team spirit and making boys into men and whatever other lame excuse we can come up with. Exactly what did the national service training achieve? A generation of men with issues and tempers and a bunch of failed marraiges (yes i am generalising). We tried to talk apartheid right cause hey everyone was doing it. Forcing someone to do something against their will or hurting them is wrong finish and klaar

Well you obviously never did military training. If you don't know the benefits of discipline and learning how to do things according to instructions and learning to respect seniors, I guess you must be one of the new generation of South African men. You probably have your hair and your nails done once a week. By the way, I married my wife soon after I came out of basic training in 1973 and we are still married. Yes I do have issues. I have issues with slapgat, incompetent, lazy people. Unfortunately those are the ones who now run the country. Please don't try to compare SADF training with schoolboy initiation ceremonies. The two are totally unrelated.

  • Pieter van Zyl - 2011-04-12 10:56

Come boys, pull in the reigns here. The society (and norms) were different when we had our initiations.

As jy die Pieter van Zyl is wat ek dink jy is: Dagbreek het jou al lankal vergeet. No need to still try and justify.

The world's a pretty sad place when "older and wiser" matrics are given the right to humilate and degrade in the name of "teaching respect and team spirit". Does being a real man involve being barbaric and lacking in compassion?

ONE WORD...BULLIES!!!! TO DO THIS I THINK IS SHAMEFUL AND PATHETIC. I DONT THINK IT SHOULD BE ALLOWED AND WHY DO THE OLDER GUYS GET A KICK OUT OF THIS. ITS JUST BEEN ABLE TO BULLY THATS ALL. ITS NOT THAT THE YOUNGER ONES ARE SISSIES ETC WHY SHOULD THE ENDURE THIS. MAYBE THE 4 THAT DID THIS TO THE VARSITY CLEANERS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO COULD ALSO GET AWAY WITH INITIATION!!!

  • Roy - 2011-04-12 11:11

If all this is true then the boys who did this must be expelled and the Principal should be fired also because he must be aware of what takes place in "his"school. He cannot plead ignorance. These boys who suffered this"initiation" would say what they said just to prevent any further problems. The parents of these abused boys should lay charges by the SAPS immediately.

  • C-Ward - 2011-04-12 11:19

These boytjies are lucky they werent going through an initiation like some other boys who become men by getting there foreskin cut off by an wannabe doctor. Now that would be something to cry about. Suck it up you ninnies!!

1)Can I ask that only people who was part of an activity that required above average individual performance as qualification to the activity preferably team participation with limited space avialable comment on the validity of initiations as a right of passage to these activities. 2)Preferably people who went through an initiation as a right of passage to belong to this group. 3)People who dont believe evrything a teen say on face value (By the way @daaivark. its common to have groups under questioning write down their account of events for various reasons (use google) I assume by having the title Dr. the principle most probably know a thing or two more about educational or teen psychology than someone called daaivark on a blog!)

daaivark was in the netball team at school.

@ Worsie. You know then, and whew that was fun. Nice and close to all those luscious young gals. Eat your heart out, Baby.

  • Rustum X - 2011-04-12 11:46

The issue is one of child-rearing, not pedagogic culture. Having a child, is nothing less than to make the bold claim that you know enough about life to guide a new being through the process. But as long as children are just resulting debris from people literally screwing around we shall have these and other issues like abortion as well...

  • coonpsycho - 2011-04-12 11:48

Well there is nothing like a good initiation. We were given Botter pille with a lot of (5h1tt) in it. They made us roll down hills until some puked some didn't, some cried others didn't. But let me tell you this, that is where you build character and define yourself. That is where everyone is equal and everyone gets treated the same. Dont get me wrong ours was harsher then it sounds, guys passed out bla bla bla, but in the end we all laughed and we were closer because we endured the same thing. I am all for it. Mommys you have to tell this to your pissy boys : TAKE IT LIKE A MAN or MAN UP. Stop babying your boys no wonders are rugby suck atm.

  • Lump of coal - 2011-04-12 11:57

These guys will be more scarred by the rugby than the initiation. Knees, ankles, ears, noses and backs all get stuffed in rugby. But heck they choose to play. Ever see the size of some of those high school kids ??? Now is mommy going to complain that they are expected to tackle?? And have you considered the alternative ???? TV games which stuff the eyes up ???? Having 1000 "friends" on facebook ???? Meeting wierdos on mixit ???? Get a life !!!
