Monkey 'burnt to death' by community

2011-05-30 10:02

Johannesburg - A vervet monkey was burnt to death in Kagiso informal settlement, west of Johannesburg, after residents believed it was linked to witchcraft, The Star newspaper reported on Monday.

"In an incident described as 'barbaric' by the Community-led Animal Welfare (Claw), residents chanted 'kill that witch!'," The Star said.

It reported that the monkey wandered into the settlement last week Monday, May 23, and was pelted with stones, shot at by police, and then burnt to death.

The monkey fled the mob and temporarily found shelter in a tree, but was pulled out, put in a bucket and doused in petrol.

"Someone struck a match. (The monkey) got out of the bucket and dropped down dead. They continued throwing stones at it," Kagiso resident, Tebogo Moswetsi was reported as saying.

'Talking to people'

Moswetsi was woken up by friends on Monday morning and told about the monkey, they said it was going around Kagiso "talking to people".

He said he joined in the case as he was curious. He was the resident that climbed the tree and brought the monkey down.

"I feel guilty, I shouldn't have taken it down from that tree. I dropped it down after someone poured petrol on it. I had no choice," Moswetsi said.

Claw manager, Cora Bailey, arrived at the scene and said she was devastated.

"I felt devastated. You could barely tell it had been a living creature. There were very small children who looked very confused and frightened."

Bailey explained animals fell victim to superstition, especially because they did not understand that such animals wander into townships because their natural habitat was destroyed or it was separated from its troop.

"It was a quest to find a family," she said.

Mob mentality

Johannes Bapela, also a Kagiso resident, called Bailey after calls to police failed to deliver results, he told The Star.

"They beat it up, then set it alight. I couldn't sleep that night because it was too traumatic," he said.

He called the claims of witchcraft "totally baseless" and added it was more mob mentality than anything else.

Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya could not confirm that police shot at the animal, the newspaper reported.

"I enquired, but I don't think it's something that was reported," Sibiya was quoted as saying.

    Superstition, religion all the same.

      Liz - 2011-05-30 11:10

Religion is not superstition....not even close!

      RationalistPabi - 2011-05-30 11:18

      Werner - 2011-05-30 11:23

That's right .. exploit the torturous death of a monkey to promote an opinion nobody really cares about. Trolls, saggy eyeball idiots ... all the same.

      Jack Turner - 2011-05-30 11:24

Sorry Liz, but William is almost correct. Almost in this respoect that possibly religion is potentially worse that Supersition.Millions of Human Beings, have beem murdered, maimed or whetever in the name of various religions.

      Mike - 2011-05-30 11:32

Even in this century, organized religion has its way of stoning or tormenting those it fails to understand. So ja....no difference really.

      eyrie - 2011-05-30 11:36

religion decries superstition-you can't be christian and be religious. The two are completely different sets of beliefs and laws etc

      eyrie - 2011-05-30 11:39

sorry I meant to say you can't be christian and superstitious--the two are entirely different ideas of worship-to burn a monkey because of witchcraft is not believing in a god who has all power and created the universe with all it's creatures including the idiots who burn some of those god created creatures believing they are somehow evil----do you see how the two are incompatible--so don't say it is the same

      jenny.presto1 - 2011-05-30 12:03

Ignorance is bliss and it is a folly to be wise for some people!

@Werner-chill dude, it's just an opinion.

      johncarlos.biza - 2011-05-30 16:44

What's the difference between believing in a tokoloshe and believing in a red creature that fries people alive for eternity???!

      Little Jim - 2011-05-31 04:59

Its the absence of religion in these peoples lives that lead to them killing a innocent animal, a creature that breathes just like humans do. And the rot that this country has the thousands of murders to millions of rapes a year is because it has lost it moral fibre and this is due the absence of any good in their lives. This good can only be brought on by living the life according to the scriptures, a life of believing in God.

      BB23 - 2011-05-31 13:58

@ Little Jim - really living according the scriptures? Which are a man made book based on perceptions. According to the scriptures animals don't have souls, and so it's ok to eat them. John Edwards will probably disagree. According to scriptures you can stone your neighbour if they plant different crops in one field. Or you can take a slave so long as they're not from the same country as you... Rather live according to this: FIRST DO NO HARM

      De_La_Rey - 2011-05-31 17:15

And this is the RUBBISH thats supposed to build and run the nation. And please don't come with this it's only a handful of bad apples nonsence.

      Krush - 2011-05-31 18:19

@ Those that say God does not exist - if there is no God, who determines right and wrong? Who then decided to lie is wrong? Adultery? Murder? Rape? etc? Surely these are biblical principals and if you think the bible is a fairy tale and/or a doctrine forced upon people..but really nothing more than stories...then why do we still have a judicial system? Why do you still follow rules ? Rules created by a God you say does not exist? And if you still feel it's "wrong" to do certain things - why is this? Indoctrinated or is it something intricately woven within you? Is it then wrong for cultures who commit human sacrifices etc to do so? And how do you plan on telling them its wrong? What value does human life hold if there is no life after death? If there are no standards. Are we any different than a Kudu being hunted by a lion?

      Jo - 2011-05-31 18:50

the quote: Religion is the opium (opiate) of the masses meant the mindless following of tradition and being enslaved by fear. Whether that was the tenets of a "faith" that millions of illiterate Europeans didn't even understand themselves, or the terror of having to appease generations of angry ghosts, it's a prison without bars that allows a few strong and cruel men to hold entire nations to ransom. If you're being told something crazy, question it. And being asked to harm a person or an animal like this is crazy.

      william.botha - 2011-05-31 19:29

Krush, really! Your argument is weak. I don't need a manual and a bunch of delusional people to understand what is good and what is bad. It is common sense. But there are those who do not trust themselves, and they need a manual and a big man in the sky to keep them on the straight and narrow. And I certainly do not need a superstition such as religion to threaten me with doom, that is stuff that belongs in the dark ages. If you are a christian, your religion is a threatening religion as is many other religions.

      Krush - 2011-05-31 21:59

@william. You didn't answer my question. You didn't even come close. I'm asking you a simple question and all you can answer is "it's common sense?" But please inform me, where does the concept of "right" and "wrong" come from? By all means...please...go ahead. A constructive answer please.

      Ching Ching - 2011-06-01 08:29

Krush - if you REALLY believe the concept of right and wrong is a biblicle thing, then you prove the studies right that you must be dof to be a christian, to be gullible and believe the crap that you do. First of all, we are human, not animals, able to think for OURSELVES, (well, most of us do, anyway), and make DECISIONS which will enhance the quality of life within a group, which is where the LAW comes from, to protect you, or others from you. This is not a christian thing, idiot, even though it might appear in the bible. Right and wrong aspect appears through all spectrums of life and religions, it may differ somewhat, but it is a HUMAN aspect, because we can think, therefore it is "common sense", something you clearly do not have.

      william.botha - 2011-06-01 09:40

Krush, "common sense" means that you decide as a human as to what is wrong and what is right, but your reply just reinforces my statement that religious types do not trust themselves. You are blind to your own cause.

      Krush - 2011-06-01 10:52

@chingching. I would much rather believe God over human theories. You believe one man's idea over another - and you call me gullible? I gaurantee if I start questioning you on cosmology, plantesimal hypothesis, organcism etc (the list is endless) you will not have an inkling of understanding. And yet you believe it all, have most likely never studied it or proven any of the theories yourself (note, theories, not facts)and you call me gullible? You call me an idiot? At least I am knowledgeable on what I believe. You require far more faith to NOT believe in God than to believe in Him. Secondly, which gene denotes common sense? What process of "evolution" caused "wrong and right" and set humans apart from animals? Which animals have a sense of morality? Please educate me since I'm the idiot and clearly you are the intellect.

These people dont want to be educated, they want everything for free, they want jobs but dont want to work.

    Bunch of Barbarians!!

      Peter - 2011-05-30 11:53

The barbarians are those employers who watch their dogz biting their employee.

      Neil - 2011-05-30 13:30

@ Peter: Build a bridge and get over it!

      Lab-Rat - 2011-05-30 14:14

@Peter, bugger the employee, I hope the dogs are fine.

      RiRo1 - 2011-05-30 14:39

@Peter That story is still BS in my eyes... Lerato is not telling the truth... how can the employers watch her being bit by the dogs, but they are not even at home? (otherwise they would have opened the gate for her, tjop) Anyway, boerboels aside, the monkey didn't do anything wrong... he was lost and probably scared, because he was alone... basically, he was killed in the end because of someone that lied... (The person that said the monkey talked to him/her, is the one that should be blamed...) Monkeys don't talk, except if you use drugs... probably smoked a sibling's AIDS medication... freaks!

      Warren - 2011-05-30 20:37

@ Oppressed: Are you bored? What are you going to eat when you and your racist cronies kill all the food producing farmers in this country? Overpriced foods from the West? Cause there's no way in hell you (with your limited IQ) would be able to do it. Go troll somewhere else you moron!

      Jethson Cloete - 2011-05-30 14:24

@ "oppressed" you are a savage nation!!! like I said in my comment earlier. quote from the movie blood diamond "God left Africa a long time ago". I'm sure if Malema and Zuma jumped off a cliff probably 80% of you're savage nation would follow. mmmmm how to get them to jump? "oppressed" you are an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Oppressed - 2011-05-30 16:00

      Jethson Cloete - 2011-05-30 17:02

@ "oppressed" I'm not going to waist anymore of my time with you. Just going to leave this little thought for you. Without the white people you would be nothing! • Johan Britz - 2011-05-30 11:02

The only thing moderately human in this article was the actual monkey...

      johncarlos.biza - 2011-05-30 16:46

      And Johannes, the guy interviewed

      Ching Ching - 2011-06-01 09:57

Wasn't the guy that was interviewed, the person who got the monkey out of the tree?

  • SilentGenius - 2011-05-30 11:07

SAPS also shooting at the monkey....shows the degree of education we have in the Police Service....

      Tea party - 2011-05-30 11:34

Then we still find it necessary to ask why crime is totally out of control. Monkeys have a higher IQ than some of the ape looking creatures in our police force

      Wizard101 - 2011-05-30 15:14

@ Tea party and they have a gorila at the helm

      Wizard101 - 2011-05-30 15:17

@ Tea party we have a gorila at the helm of the SAPS

  • Snoek - 2011-05-30 11:08

It reminds me of a story I've heard while traveling the UK: During the Napoleonic wars, a French ship of the type chasse marée was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor was a monkey, wearing a French uniform (allegedly)-(presumably to provide amusement for those on board the ship). On finding the monkey, some locals decided to hold an impromptu trial on the beach; since the monkey was unable to answer their questions, and many locals were unaware of what a Frenchman may look like, they concluded that the monkey was in fact a French spy. Just to make sure, the animal was thus sentenced to death and hanged from the mast of a fishing boat on the Headland.

      Mike - 2011-05-30 11:15

One would have hoped as a civilization we had evolved. Apparently not.

  • Liz - 2011-05-30 11:10

WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!! This is SICK! I am disgusted in the human race!

      Dustin Wetdewich - 2011-05-30 12:44

Really?? Johan? Superstition is superstition?? doesn't matter the race of the person whites have burnt PEOPLE at the stake for being "witches". This isn't a race issue here, people of ALL races have been cruel to animals for all kinds of reasons.

      HardHitter - 2011-06-01 10:09

Liz, but they aren't human... they are looking for the missing link between human and ape, in in fact, science has proven its them. half ape half human.

  • HCrouse - 2011-05-30 11:10

WOW! a talking monkey. I guess it was speaking in tongues.

      Spoofed - 2011-05-30 11:53

If i had to come across i talking monkey i would ask it questions, video tape it's answers and post it on you tube.. then i would watch the money come rolling in.. not burn the thing to death.. stupid ppl lol

      Louis III - 2011-05-30 13:57

  • Alan - 2011-05-30 11:11

As Mahatma Ghandi said : Judge a community by the way they treat animals. As I say : democracy without a qualified franchise is no democracy.

      The Ted Vos - 2011-05-30 12:48

"and he was racist", just like you...

      Neil - 2011-05-30 13:45

True Alan. Can someone please remove this Oppressed idiot off the forum? He just sees black and white and has the IQ of a salad bowl.

      omrisho - 2011-05-30 14:31

yip Alan... spot on, that is how a democracy should work.

      RiRo1 - 2011-05-30 15:00

@Alan Actually, you can say, judge a PERSON's character by the way he treats animals and less fortunate people... If a person can treat ALL people and animals with respect, he deserves respect. If he can't, he has no RIGHT to respect...

      Wizard101 - 2011-05-30 15:24

@ Neil not a salad bowl a sand pebel

  • tennilleg - 2011-05-30 11:11

So sickening, and this wasn't as a result of one idiot but a group of complete morons, sadly this is not something new, it happens all over the country, and school children often entertain themselves by torturing and killing stray animals that they find in their communities. Which is why more people must adopt a pet and not buy, it is the only way to save animals from suffering this kind of fate. I could not bring myself to actually read the article, but how is it that a wild animal was living in Kagiso?

  • Werner - 2011-05-30 11:12

I really wish Hayibo can write a satirical piece on this....but substitute some political entities for the monkey.

      Matt - 2011-05-30 13:15

Last I heard, Hayibo stopped.... shame!

      Matt - 2011-05-30 13:21

Just checked - oh, so they're back? Cool!

  • willem.p.grobbelaar - 2011-05-30 11:15

    time 2 burn the community!!

  • Genesistt - 2011-05-30 11:18

This is sick! This is supposed to be the 21st century, but these people are going on as if it was still the dark ages! What's next? Burning women because they mix the wrong herbs into the stew? How can things like this still be happening in this age of information and enlightenment? Barbarians!!!

  • Silk24 - 2011-05-30 11:20

i would like to use that whole community as human shields...i HATE them

  • Ntebo More - 2011-05-30 11:22

because of what happened to the poor monkey in a township I don't know ,I'm a monkey too?I don't condone what happened, the poor monkey was lost looking for its parents

  • Fantasia - 2011-05-30 11:22

Definitely makes me an ashamed south african, people should educate themselves!!!! Lord have mercy on them!

  • Shamin Chibba - 2011-05-30 11:22

    Who're the real animals?

  • Bongza.GP - 2011-05-30 11:24

This is a sad reflection of my people and of my land. Lafa elihle kakhulu.

      HCrouse - 2011-05-30 11:37

the responses here are a sad reflection of my people and my land.

      Cora Bailey - 2011-05-30 13:24

Bongsza, please remember that the majority of the community were also horrified by the incident, and several risked their lives to intervene, and to speak to journalists. How incredibly sad that this has turned into a racist slanging match. And that no solutions have been offered.

  • Ou Van - 2011-05-30 11:25

Typical bloody rural mentality. Shame on these people. And I bet you if someone tried to help this poor animal, they would've been stoned and burnt as well. It's the year 2011. It's time these 3rd world, ignorant, sub human idiots catch a wake up.

      Ann - 2011-05-30 15:18

FYI Van, there was one lone person who actually tried to save the poor animal, but he was actually threatened as well. Sub-human is a good description. Far too much hate and intolerance towards so many things and people. As Ghandi said, "Man will be judged by the way he treats the animals"!

  • Goose - 2011-05-30 11:26

    Welcome to Africa!

  • Rosemary - 2011-05-30 11:27

Barbaric is what this is!! Totally disgusting.

  • Tea party - 2011-05-30 11:28

And then we see our country as being 3rd world. Not even close, we are even behind the rest of Africa. Freaking savages. I am actually becoming embarrassed to tell people abroad that I am from SA

  • Joburg1 - 2011-05-30 11:32

In the black community to see a monkey is regarded as an omen!! be that is it may, since it was captured someone could've called SPCA, roasting? it phew!! it was in a way cruel!!

      Goose - 2011-05-30 11:36

"it was in a way cruel" ...some what of an understatement.

      Smaal - 2011-05-30 11:44

Come on Joburg1, you talking about a people who kill their own to use for medicine and should I mention putting burning tyres around people’s necks... calling it cruel is an understatement.

      Joy - 2011-05-30 14:05

They also believe that Owls are a bad omen and go out of their way to kill them ....

      Wizard101 - 2011-05-30 15:04

Joburg1 when they look in a mirror they see a bad omen,so seing a monkey they thought they saw themselfs

  • HCrouse - 2011-05-30 11:39

I hear of good wholesome witseuns blowing up animals every Guy Fawkes day. They have no crazy superstitions. They're just mean.

      Johan Britz - 2011-05-30 12:03

How often does Guy Fawkes happen? ONCE a year. This kind of cr@p happens daily.

      Lanfear - 2011-05-30 13:19

Exactly HCrouse! That has been my exact thought when I read all these racist comments of "barbarians" and "typically Africa", etc. Tell me people, what was your reaction when a couple of years ago a man chopped off a husky pup's head with a chainsaw? Did you condemn as barbaric, typically Africa, with a dearth or racist comments? Did you condemn all whites as savage animal killers? @ Johan Britz - perhaps you should volunteer at the SPCA or AACL for a couple of weeks, then you will see the terrible neglect, cruelty and plain sadism that the so-called "civilised" people are capable of as well. And not just in Africa, read a couple of weeks ago about a group of very white European boys in Ireland that blew a dog's jaw away with a firecracker. And about an American woman the other day that starved her dog almost to death, then put it in a garbage chute! The poor dog was saved but you should have seen the pics, heartbreaking! This is a human phenomenon people. Many many humans treat animals like shyte! "Civilised" people in all parts of the world do so, or allow it to be done. It is terrible what happened and my reaction to the "witchcraft" claims is also to scream in frustration. But does the reason for animal cruelty really matter? Is it not the act that should be deplored the most? Is not education of animals and animal rights the answer? For example, the Soweto Horse-Care Unit have done wonders in educating those with donkeys and/or horses. Fine example to all...

      RiRo1 - 2011-05-30 15:07

Yes HCrouse... they are evil... no respect for animals and thus deserves no respect :-( as a white person, I totally disagree with their disgusting behaviour... But it doesn't mean I will use it as an excuse as to why another human CAN do that... That's just wrong...

  • Celesté - 2011-05-30 11:40

The poor frightened little thing, what must it's last moments have been like? Probably very similar to how the daily human victims of South Africa's crime feels when they face their last moments staring into their barbaric murderers nasty faces knowing that they are going to die.

  • Rodney Emmerich - 2011-05-30 11:42

Another article about primates , we are being taunted to make derogarory comments

      Happy-go-lucky - 2011-05-30 12:02

the mob or the monkey? ;)

  • Flee - 2011-05-30 11:42

I seriously hope someone "witchcraft's" each and every one of their genitals.. Frikkin Idiots its a bloody Monkey.. Not the Tokoloshe...

  • Rodney Emmerich - 2011-05-30 11:43

    I mean derogatory

  • MattQ4 - 2011-05-30 11:48

It's only a shocking story in the context of the 21st century. When you make peace with the fact the most South Africans are, from a social, intellectual and educational point of view, probably sitting somewhere in pre-Renaissance development, then you realize that this and indeed much of what happens here, is actually not that hard to believe... No difference to Europe in the dark ages!!

  • JMan - 2011-05-30 11:48

Oh man. Witchcraft...these people need to get educated...Poor monkey.
