Moodley's claims bizarre - Leigh's family
Johannesburg - The parents of Leigh Matthews have rejected the new statements made in court by her convicted killer Donovan Moodley.
Moodley is currently bringing an application for a retrial in the South Gauteng High Court. He was found guilty of murdering the 21-year-old student following a kidnapping in 2004, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Eyewitness News reports that the family dismissed Moodley’s version of events and said his testimony was “bizarre”.
Moodley claims he did not kill Matthews and said three drug dealers kidnapped her. He claims he was tortured to make a confession and says he was set up.
Sharon Matthews was in court on Wednesday and said afterwards that Moodley was a perfect case study of a sociopath, as all the proceedings were all about him.
She said she thought of her daughter and how frightened and scared she must have been during her kidnapping.
Leigh’s father, Rob, was also angered by Moodley’s new account of what had supposedly happened.
Leigh was shot dead nearly two weeks after her father made a ransom payment of R50 000.
Her body was later found in Walkerville.
Moodley's application for a retrial continues on Thursday.
