Johannesburg - National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega says the arrest of three police officers from the Central Firearms Registry is just the tip of the iceberg in a probe into fake gun licences.

According to the Sunday Times, thousands of gun licences in South Africa might be reviewed and possibly even cancelled, and more arrests are expected.

Three police officers from the Central Firearms Registry in Pretoria were taken into custody last week as well as three Capetonians – 28s gang kingpin Ralph Stanfield, his girlfriend and his sister.

The arrests followed a lengthy investigation by members of the Western Cape police’s Operation Combat – a unit aimed at cracking down on gang-related crime.

This is not however the first time problems have occurred at the Central Firearms Registry. In 2010, then police minister Nathi Mthethwa and former national police commissioner General Bheki Cele promised to sort out problems associated with the office.

Mthethwa said at the time there were serious challenges with the CFR that were undermining the implementation of the Firearms Control Act.

He conceded that some licence applications were taking as long as six years to process and that there were elements of corruption involved in the operation of the registry.

He said an intervention team had been put in place to implement changes to areas creating problems.
