Johannesburg - Newly-elected African Union Commission chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Cosatu have wished former president Nelson Mandela a happy 94th birthday, the department of home affairs said.

"TaTa was one of the many congress movement leaders who understood the revolutionary role of trade unions," the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) said in a statement on Tuesday.

"As trade unionists we are left every day to fight unpalatable apartheid fault lines... and TaTa always had comforting words he shared with us such as the 'brave man is not he who does feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear'."

Cosatu called on all its members and society to support international Mandela Day.

Meanwhile, a home affairs department spokesperson said Dlamini-Zuma was sworn in as chairperson of the AU commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, early on Tuesday morning.

She had since returned to South Africa from the AU's two-day 19th Ordinary Session of heads of state and government.

Despite her new appointment, President Jacob Zuma said Dlamini-Zuma would remain minister of home affairs for the time being.

"[She remains minister] until all the requirements and processes related to the assumption of her new position of AU Commission chairperson have been completed," the presidency said.
