Moses Kotane establishes accounts committee
Johannesburg - The Moses Kotane local municipality in the North West has established a municipal public accounts committee, spokesperson Beauty Makganye said on Thursday.
"The eleven-member committee chaired by councillor Sipho Vava will serve as an oversight committee over council’s executive obligations," she said.
She said the primary functions of the committee included considering and evaluating annual reports and making recommendations to council when adopting oversight reports.
The committee was also expected to examine financial statements and audit reports.
"It will assist council to hold executive and municipal entities accountable and ensure efficient use of municipal resources."
The committee will report to council quarterly and promote good governance, transparency and accountability on the use of municipal resources.
She said the council resolved at its meeting on Tuesday to establish the municipal public accounts committee.
Moses Kotane local municipality is one of five local municipalities in Bojanala Platinum District Municipality.
It was named in memory of Moses Kotane, the late secretary general of the SA Communist Party. The seat of the local municipality is Mogwase near Sun City.
The municipality was placed under administration last year in terms of Section 139 of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
