Most wanted arrested - police

2004-10-28 12:06
line

Cape Town - A total of 272 of South Africa's most wanted criminals have been arrested since President Thabo Mbeki's State of the Nation address in May, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula said on Thursday.

He said the police had a long list of most wanted criminals but Mbeki urged the country's security agencies to arrest at least 200 of them.

"Consequently, a total of 51 syndicate leaders have been identified and are being investigated," Nqakula told reporters at parliament.

He said of those arrested, 94 were wanted for murder, rape or robbery in 63 police station areas where crime rates were very high, 59 others were wanted for major commercial crimes and 44 were sought for heists and bank robberies.

Thirty-two others were wanted on five or more cases related to property crimes and 31 were leaders of organised crime syndicates.

Eight were wanted for two or more cases of murder, rape and robbery while four were serial murderers and rapists, the minister said.

Ten organised crime projects have been started as a result of a planning session on an integrated approach to organised crime.

The planning session was held late in August, Nqakula said.

Latest comment in South Africa

Alain says... All I can do is laugh at your comment! Hahahaha... You based your whole comment on an assumption made! Me asian? U got to be kidding me? I'm born through and through coloured! This shows me how narrow minded you are! Believe me I do not have any hint of asian blood in me! My blood is african and I will not let u make face value assumptions about my heritage! Don't make assumptions cause you just completely made an ass of yourself! I get irritated because of the \we were here first\ mentality! Honestly grow up! What is frustrating is how our past is determining our future! No one was \stairing\ u up to anger, it was an opinion that is different to yours and I'm entitled to that!(Oh maybe I'm racist then) and not an attack! U ask who I am? I am a citizen of South Africa! And I have the right to citizenship and the right to express myself on anything that I deem fit! It sadness me that you believe only blacks are entitled to call Africa home... It is quite obvious that I am not the problem... Read the article...
