Johannesburg -  A mother and her son were killed and three other people injured in a accident in Cato Ridge near Pietermaritzburg, paramedics said on Sunday.

ER24 spokesperson Andre Visser said a 26-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son died in an accident on the road to George Dale on Sunday afternoon.

"A Range Rover Evoque veered out of control and left the road. The vehicle then overturned."

Some of the occupants were flung from the vehicle as it overturned.

The woman and her child sustained critical injuries and were trapped in the vehicle. Both were declared dead on the scene.

The father and another couple were treated for injuries including broken bones, suspected back and neck injuries, scrapes and bruises.

They were transported to nearby hospitals.

Visser said the cause of the accident was unclear at this stage.

Meanwhile, in Gauteng, two men died and 11 other people were seriously injured when a minibus taxi overturned on the N1 near Hammanskraal, paramedics said on Sunday.

Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the accident happened in the late hours of Saturday night.

"Injured passengers told of how they had complained to the driver about a strange noise coming from the rear wheels." The minibus overturned shortly after that and rolled for nearly 100m, Wicks said.

Commuters were flung from the vehicle as it rolled. Two men who sustained critical injuries died on the scene while another man was airlifted to the Steve Biko Hospital with serious injuries.

"The other injured were transported by ambulance to local hospitals."

Wicks said the cause of the accident was not yet known.

In Limpopo, police are searching for the driver of white Citi Golf who killed a woman in a hit and run accident in Madibeng village on Sunday.
