Johannesburg - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has urged local and provincial leaders to use the expertise gained during the 2010 Soccer World Cup to fast-track service delivery to communities.
Motlanthe on Saturday concluded a two-day visit to the Bitou municipality in the Western Cape. He was accompanied by, amongst others, Western Cape premier, Helen Zille.
On Friday night Motlanthe and Zille addressed a community meeting. At the meeting community members complained about the allocation of houses, job creation and access to primary healthcare.
The deputy president said he was concerned about the lack of co-ordination in service delivery.
"The recurring concern as we undertake this programme as national government is the lack of co-ordination of how government at local level delivers its services," he said.
The premier, Helen Zille, told the community that it was important for them to partner with government to "uplift them from poverty".
She also stressed that people should hold their leaders to account and that "corrupt leaders make their people poorer".
The national and provincial leadership undertook to return to the Bitou municipality to assess progress.
