Motorist held for driving at 200km/h

2012-01-02 08:00

Johannesburg - A man was arrested for clocking 200km/h on a 120 speeding zone on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway outside Brits in the North West Province on New Year's Day.

According to the provincial public safety department, the 22-year-old was driving a BMW 330i with Gauteng registration plates.

"The suspect said to be a student at a tertiary institution was driving from Sun City to Laudium with his girl-friend and another couple at the time of the alleged offence," said spokesperson Lesiba Moses Kgwele.

"He was locked up at the Brits Police Station and is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrates court on Tuesday to answer to charges of speeding."

    What a little prick !!

      Daan - 2012-01-02 08:14

You actualy mean "Big PRICK"? To put first of all other road users safety at risk, and secondly his passengers safety also? MEGA STUPID!!

      George - 2012-01-02 08:51

@ Deeteem, At 22 driving a BMW 330i, he must have

      Hunter - 2012-01-02 08:57

@ Squeegee, bail applications are not heard on public holidays and Sundays.

      Squeegee - 2012-01-02 09:09

Leonard, I saw that immediately - that was my whole point. Hunter - good point.

      steve.dupreez - 2012-01-02 09:21

@Leonard Bloch - I can not understand why you guys always bring race into everything. He is a young man with to moch access to daddy's money. Exactly the same as many white little pricks here in Sandton but NO ONE makes a racist comment when a white prick writes off his car ar even his daddy's car. are you so petrified by other skin colours that you need to keep this hatred bubbling?

      Craig - 2012-01-02 09:27

@Leonard Bloch. We thumb you down because you are obviously and old racist. It has nothing to do with what you are saying, it is the racial remarks in your comment that provokes an immediate repulsion. Live with it! As for us being products of a new education system, let me tell you we are far better educated than you will ever know. Just because the man was on his way to Laudium, now he should be executed. If he was on his way to Waterkloof then you probably wouldn't even commented on this subject.

      Craig - 2012-01-02 10:17

@Leonard Bloch. Is this all you come up for justifying your racialism? Attack my beliefs and picture? At least I am man enough to put my picture to my mouth, which is a lot more than can be said of you. The sooner our country gets rid of your generation, the quicker the healing will happen. The fact that us generation has to go find jobs in a another country is all been caused by the likes of you that sit all comfortable and continue your racial hate. You don't serve a purpose any more and all you are good for is come on forums like this and continue your quest for racial divide.

      deabreu - 2012-01-02 10:22

He can kill himself as long as he does not kill anyone else. For anyone who beleives driving 200Km/h is "safe", you have a few options. Take an advanced drivers' course to learn the reality of speed. For those who don't want to, or who don't have money like this "Richie Rich", go to youtube and search for "Crash test at 200km/h!!!".

      Bongani - 2012-01-02 10:28

@Craig. Don't bother with him. As you say he is just another faceless troll that turns EVERY news report in to a mud slinging match running all the other races down. He will find something racial in a report dealing with planting seedlings in one's garden.

      Adrian - 2012-01-02 10:37

Showing off to the girlfriend more likely!

      James - 2012-01-02 16:49

They drive 350k on the Autobahnen. And it's safer than US95 Main to Florida.

  • rod.buchan - 2012-01-02 08:18

smart observation Squeegee!I'd bet money on it your dead right!

  • charles.ojur - 2012-01-02 08:48

Squeegee it was a Sunday/new years day/public holiday...courts don't operate on any of those days and hence bail could not be granted.

  • sadiemy - 2012-01-02 08:50

Was he in daddy's car? Or is he just another over-subsidised student? Parents should take some responsibility. I am sure they can come up with some ready cash to get him off the charges....

      deabreu - 2012-01-02 10:26

It may be, some population goups and families (of various races, I must emphasise), club their family's money together and help each other. Also, some popluation groups are good in business and it is a family business.

  • freefrag - 2012-01-02 08:51

@Squeegee. I'm guessing no bail, because of the public holidays. No magistrates or anyone are open to award bail until Tuesday anyway. It was always going to be a long weekend, especially for those arrested early in the weekend. Maybe it's a precedent that needs to be set.

  • Trevor - 2012-01-02 08:55

LMAO..some of these comments..you know the expression, " people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.."..I BET every "prick" here who's commenting has sped at sometime in their life they just not been caught yet or killed someone...irrespective of the speed, it's speeding...I've fallen harder and broken more body parts on the race track/bush at 20- 30km/h than at 80...so speed is relative...200 on a open highway or 80 in 60 zone residential area, what is more dangerous...but I guess we all think we know better and what is "safe"...he broke the law, got caught and now he has a problem...let the law handle him as it should.

      George - 2012-01-02 09:00

@ Trevor, this has nothing to do with race, it is about driving to fast

      Squeegee - 2012-01-02 09:11

Did you fall on your head? Sounds like it.

      steve.dupreez - 2012-01-02 09:23

@george - page up to that Bloch guy's comment - then come back and say it is not about race.

      George - 2012-01-02 09:39

      @ steve.dupreez, Humor, read again

      Marc - 2012-01-02 09:41

No squeegee, he's just very, very young. Check his pic. 30kph on an enduro bike, that's a good one. At 200kph you're doing 160ft/sec or 48 m/sec. In the time it takes you to start braking, you've covered 150m depending on issues such as moment of reaction, moment of anticipation etc. It’s academic. Speed kills. This is why people never die in parking garages despite bad lighting, and due to the nature of the task at hand, they are not looking where they are gong - and they still don't prang. Because they are going slowly. This is the good bit: "he broke the law, got caught and now he has a problem". Breaking the law is not his problem. His problem is that he is a mindless idiot - that is a much bigger problem.

      thozi - 2012-01-02 11:31

@ George They probably missed it George. Yes I agree fully with you... it's not about race (track or otherwise).

      Squeegee - 2012-01-02 12:13

Leonard. See my point to George down below. Sorry to drag you into this...

      Trevor - 2012-01-02 12:40

@Markc57-Point is, every person here who drives or rides has or will or is breaking the speed limit....These holy than thou comments I'm reading are posted by people who should maybe take a lesson from their own "advice/statements". One could swear this guy was the only speedster in SA... @Squeegee-ok with a name like that, going to be pointless commenting..LMAO

      James - 2012-01-02 16:42

They drive 350k on the Autobahnen.

  • Shirley - 2012-01-02 09:06

Oh come on-what possible justification is there for such speed????? Charge him with attempted murder and then lock him up!!!! Little rich boy who thinks daddy will pay the fine and all will be fine!!!!

  • steven.m.armour - 2012-01-02 09:31

Throw the key away. He's endangering everyone on the roads lifes as well as his passengers.

      Heinrich - 2012-01-02 09:51

I would love to see you try to prove your allegation, steven.

      chubbycheeks - 2012-01-02 10:42

Driving 200kmph is evidence enough of reckless driving and endangering others on the road!!

  • Sandra - 2012-01-02 09:57

Im afraid there are still a few BIG pricks like him driving on the roads. Put them all in jail and give them very hefty fines. In fact take their drivers licences away so that they cannot go out there in their fancy fast cars and make it unsafe for us drivers on the roads.

  • Peter - 2012-01-02 10:06

The way to solve this sort of behaviour is the take thier licience off them forever the same as drinking and driving get them off roads forever

  • neil.purves - 2012-01-02 10:20

cool, he will battle to sit when he gets back to class!

  • chubbycheeks - 2012-01-02 10:34

Take away his lisence and only give him a scooter lisence for the next 10years! Idiot!!

  • Zanele - 2012-01-02 10:43

BUEN TRABAJO A LOS TRAFFIC COPS!IMPRESIONADA!

  • Paul - 2012-01-02 10:47

Is 200 that fast? I seem to remember regularly traveling close to that speed on the M1 and concrete highway on quiet days. I guess with more people on the road and many more deaths these days. Do the crime, spend the time...

      Jason - 2012-01-02 19:46

No achievement to going 200 in any decent car. But if you really must, do it on your own while driving on a completely deserted stretch of road through the Karoo. That way if you crash and die you, only your own family and friends suffer.

  • Barbara - 2012-01-02 11:26

The real issue here is, he was in an upmarket German car that CAN do over 200kph and was probably advertised to him as such. The downside is the road from Sun City to Laudium is BAD and not a race track, nor a highway. They were probably in a hurry to get home after a day out. Wrong choice to speed here as it is also a known fact the cops trap on this road. By the way, I don't condone the speed either and hope he gets a stiff penalty, preferably not cash which he could probably afford without blinking

      Jason - 2012-01-02 19:37

The car CAN do 200km/h+ but the driver CAN NOT prevent an accident from happening at that speed.

  • Call_Of_Muti_3 - 2012-01-02 11:30

This IS a Race issue. Surely it would have been safer RACING at that speed in an AMG Mercedes? They are engineered to go that fast. tl;dr racism : the BMW VS Merc debate

      Juan - 2012-03-13 02:33

Bull **** the Merc might have more power, but the BM has better handling

  • Morakane - 2012-01-02 11:35

    Stupid is as stupid does...SMH

  • Alva - 2012-01-02 11:47

Sounds like an indulged brat! Clever enough to get into a tertiary institution, too stupid to be responsible.

  • Getafix - 2012-01-02 11:56

SA Needs a AutoBahn!!!!!!!!!!!!! Already. Not for trucks, just cars that are checked at checkpoints. And by all means, toll em.

  • George - 2012-01-02 12:01

@ SQUUEGEE Wrong is wrong. We all know that driving at this speed is not good. I have attended to many accidents caused by speed and have taken the lifeless bodies of all races out of car wrecks. This includes children and let me tell you today , since you are so clever with skin colour , that I have seen the majority of whites driving like total idiots. When I do take out a body I cannot afford to , and do not , look at race because I have taken out bodies some of them still warm. Maybe come with me one day and do this with me and I promise you your view of racism will change. What is so amazing to me is that when you are sick or in a accident you do not prefer to be treated by white doctors or nurses do you? At that time race is of no issue to you. As long as they can save your life. This is a mind thing so in 2012 get your mindset right and throw your weight in at building a better South Africa. If you were in a need of a lifesaving organ will you rather die than to get a heart from another race. They all look the same and do the same thing. I guess some of us has been taught racism because you are not born with it. It's simply a choice.

      Squeegee - 2012-01-02 12:12

George, calm down. I made a stupid comment and it got all twisted. I was actually pointing a finger at the cops, suggesting that they had it in for this guy because of the Laudium angle and that's why he did not get bail. I was reminded that the reason no bail was granted was because of the public holiday. My bad. I feel strongly about bad driving by anyone, of any age, driving any make of vehicle. Almost started the third World War... Oops!

  • Gregory Jurgens - 2012-01-02 12:46

    Atleast he wasn't liquored up.

  • Phil - 2012-01-02 13:29

For a moment I thought they were talking of a taxi cruising at 200.

  • Mike - 2012-01-02 13:55

It seems that no amount of death on the road can get into the brains of these dick-heads. The only solution is to lock them up for a mandatory 3 months before bringing them to trial. No bail entitlement for this period!

  • gcshrimpton - 2012-01-02 14:03

    Yawn! Hayabusa rider!

  • Cathy - 2012-01-02 14:05

@ 22 they think that nothing will ever happen to them. Glad he was pulled off and locked up. Now maybe he will think about other road users safety!

  • Derek - 2012-01-02 14:43

Thow away the key. This is attempted murder.

  • Allan - 2012-01-02 15:20

It makes one think whether this "lightie" has ever trained in advanced driving in order to race at that speed on pothole filled roads. I doubt it and as it well known that mainly male drivers between 18-24 are the the cause for most fatal motor vehicle collisions on roads. I trust this driver will be charged and spend time inside at the pleasure of the "government"......

  • Freedom Gumede - 2012-01-02 15:52

What he did was wrong. But people don't realise how easy it is to reach 200km/hr in modern luxury cars. It doesn't necessarily mean this person was doing a constant 200km/hr. Now for him to be thrown into a cell with other criminals maybe a good lesson, but seems harsh for him to serve any jail time. He deserves a ridiculously large fine of at least 20 or 30 grand.

      JLWilson - 2012-01-02 19:45

Freedom, his family will pay the fine and he won't feel the pinch. Spending time in jail will give him the opportunity to focus on his selfish life and learn that he needs to be more considerate of others' around him. Have you ever lost a loved one to a speedster?? If not, don't comment.

  • ludlowdj - 2012-01-02 15:56

lock him up for a good couple of years without the option of parole. If he's breaking the law at his age then he's nothing more than a repeat offender waiting for a place to happen.........or will the courts just wait until he kills someone before giving him a slap on the hand

  • subhashlalji - 2012-01-02 16:14

lets hope he gets locked for enough years so he forgets to drive IDIOT AND A BLOODY FOOL

  • Albert - 2012-01-02 17:41

Confiscate his car, sell it on auction, buy him a BMX bicycle and donate the rest of the money to charity.

  • Jason - 2012-01-02 18:10

Confiscation of offending vehicles is the only real remedy for the typical death-proof South African reasoning that 120km/h is too slow and that most modern vehicles are capable of travelling safely at 160+ km/h.

  • Bert - 2012-01-02 18:45

A South African Professional Footballer gets arrested for 214 kph in a 60 kph limit. Gets R2000 within hours. Sorry, am I missing something here? I agree the a/hole should be locked up but then shouldn't the 'criminal' whose speeding scenario is far worse. Probably gave the cops tickets for a few games!

      Bert - 2012-01-02 18:51

oops, no bail over holiday weekends, ok that's cool, let the sh*t sit and rot! Still, should be sitting holding hands with the other a/hole.

  • JLWilson - 2012-01-02 19:34

Hunter & Sqeegee - he shouldn't be given the option of bail. He should appear in court first thing on Tuesday morning and be sentenced to 10 years with immediate effect and have his licence revoked. At least he won't be given the opportunity to go on another joy ride.

      Squeegee - 2012-01-02 20:05

Hey, I agree on this one...

  • Wynand - 2012-01-02 19:51

This man didn't care about himself or the passengers safety and he did not think about the other road users.

  • gembleton1 - 2012-01-03 10:41

Ban him for driving for life, forget what race he is, if he is so idiotic to drive at these speeds at 22 he should not have the privilege of a drivers licence for the rest of his life.

  • thinga - 2012-01-03 12:16

I once clocked 241km/h and got away with it! Since then, I play around 120 - 140km/h

      Magezi - 2012-01-04 14:12

      You are just as dumb-arsed...

  • Mike - 2012-01-30 20:32

the dude is cleary to young to handle a 330i, he's an ass - the car is good!!!

      Juan - 2012-03-13 02:38

@mike show me a high performance car owner that has never exceeded the speed limit. So anybody driving a 330! is an ass by your measurement
