Pretoria - Women have been ready to lead "since time immemorial", ANC Women's League (ANCWL) president Angie Motshekga said on Thursday.

Addressing the question of whether the league would support a female as the next ANC and South African president, she however, stopped short of proclaiming this would happen.

"On the lips of many, is whether this ANCWL is unafraid to discuss and call for the future president of both the ANC and South Africa to be a woman," she said while delivering her political report at the league's conference in Pretoria.

"I have always said, and I shall repeat it again today, we have been ready to lead at any level of society since time immemorial and women have always been capable to lead."

She said history was littered with examples of women's ability to organise and lead.

"Our forebears prepared us for the eventuality of leadership."

This was the only reference Motshekga made to the question of a woman president.

In 2013 she was quoted saying the ANC was not ready for a female president.

At the time, she said she was misunderstood.

She has also said it was the men in the ANC who were not ready to relinquish power to a woman.
