Motsoaledi urges men to get circumcised

2011-11-25 15:51

Johannesburg - Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has urged men to be circumcised to reduce their chances of contracting HIV, Beeld reported on Friday.

"We have proof that male circumcision reduces the chance of the virus being transmitted from a man to a woman," he told the National Assembly on Thursday during a debate on World Aids Day.

The government would tour the country to spread this message.

"We will call on every man who has not been circumcised to make sure he is circumcised," he said.

State health facilities would provide free circumcisions.

Circumcision had to become part of a package of measures on sexual health, which included the use of condoms and responsible behaviour towards sexual partners, he said.

Wear a condom and stop breeding

      Nicholas.Spaggiari - 2011-11-25 17:22

Ja, get circumcised and then have a hot shower. HA HA HA... Actually, getting circumcised will most likely increase the risk of HIV, as I’ve read that uncircumcised males have slightly less risk, although very small, formal and PROPER studies have shown some instances of the “fskin” acting as a barrier. I would like to know what proof they have.

They could also just stop having sex with everyone they see. Commit to a relationship or keep it in their trousers. Stop breeding and if you want to shag around put on a rubber. Also please watch http://www.houseofnumbers.com/site/ House of Numbers, it reveals some unknown truths about this thing we call Aids.

  • Woerie - 2011-11-25 15:58

    Off with their heads!!

  • Malachai - 2011-11-25 15:59

Can somebody please tell me HOW does circumcision prevent aids??

      robbie.crouch - 2011-11-25 16:05

I can't get my head around that one either...

      Deon - 2011-11-25 16:07

The forskin tends to bleed easily and harbour germs, but not everyone in scientific community is convinced it (circumcision) helps stopping the spread of HIV.

      Malachai - 2011-11-25 16:21

Both the WHO and CDC indicate that circumcision may not reduce HIV transmission from men to women...wikipedia..

      BA - 2011-11-25 18:06

Circumcision is so sore that you refrain from having sex for a month hence less chance of transmitting your AIDS virus for that period.

      MaxOdin.SA - 2011-11-26 01:12

@ Deon bra you must be having some kinky sex. I have a 4$kin and mine has never blead. Never! not even from braces or swinging from chandalliers. I've used and abused that thing and it just laughs at me.

  • Paul - 2011-11-25 16:01

    Circumcision is a rip-off

  • robbie.crouch - 2011-11-25 16:04

It is the sleeping around that spreads the virus... but hey why stop the fun?

  • Breedlike - 2011-11-25 16:04

Get aids, die, we need the space.

      Kenny - 2011-11-25 20:03

You sound like a little angry man. Winter is coming don't forget the SWINE FLU!

  • Chervonne - 2011-11-25 16:04

This Minister a stupid like the previous one the one said beetroot now circumcision don't dip your stick where it should not be dipped get tested and stick to one partner thats the message that must be presented cause more HIV/Aids to be spreaded where did these people study surely not one of south Africa's Faculties

      Adam - 2011-11-25 17:54

Bang on Chervonne !! Yet again a classic case of working around the problem instead of hitting it head on. Recently I was involved in a conversation where it was stated, "rather have anal sex becuase AIDS lives in the vagina" it was at this point that I realized there is no hope at all.

  • BelindaS12 - 2011-11-25 16:08

I would love to know if our sexually abused woman and children will also get FREE MEDICAL TREATMENT. SHOCKING HOW IMPORTANT SEX IS TO MEN ARE ALL PAEDIOPHILES ALSO CIRCUMCISED. http://www.turnitaround.co.za/petition/19/stop-bail-for-paedophiles

  • Nosiphom - 2011-11-25 16:12

In other words, the government is admitting that they have failed in: 1. Convincing people to stay faithful to one partner; 2. Condomise if they really feel they have to sleep around or 3. To abstain. This circumcision drive will onyl increase unwanted pregnancies and the very HIV infection they tell us it will reduce.

      Breedlike - 2011-11-25 16:17

@ Nosiphom, you mean wanted pregnancies, in this country more babies = more free money

  • Kagisho - 2011-11-25 16:14

Do i intepret this message correctly: "We have proof that male circumcision reduces the chance of the virus being transmitted from a man to a woman," he told the National Assembly on Thursday during a debate on World Aids Day." does the Minister imply that it is not reduced if it is the other way around "woman to man" and if this is correct why even border with the statement that will continue to kill more citizens by the confusion within the intepretation. Encourage people to circumcise but please do that whilst you are enforcing the use of condoms nothing else will mitigate this disease unless if we find a cure. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Motsoaledi-urges-men-to-get-circumcised-20111125

  • Trudy - 2011-11-25 16:26

another idiot, why can he not urge men to use condoms, instead of getting the "chop". Another embarrassment for our country ai, when will it stop!!

      Kotie - 2011-11-25 17:33

I agree Trudy. "HIV doesn't cause AIDS"..."I took a shower afterwards (I slept with an HIV+ person)"..."Eat your beetroot"..."Get circumsised" Will it ever stop? And they are the role models our people listen to and follow. So sad indeed!!!

  • Marion - 2011-11-25 16:37

Why not chuck in free irreversible vasectomies at the same time. For those who have more than 2 or 3 kids and want to sow their wild oats without having to pray for crop failure?

  • brendon.lieberz - 2011-11-25 16:53

    Keep the tip!!!!

  • darrin.lang - 2011-11-25 16:57

    what an idiot

  • John - 2011-11-25 17:09

There is a huge body of evidence to suggest that the data used to "prove" the hypothesis that circumcised men are less likely to contract aids was manipulated to obtain a specific outcome. The case is in no way proved.

  • chauke - 2011-11-25 17:17

A lot of white people are negative about this. Is it because they're not circumcised? I wonder!

      Grant - 2011-11-25 17:50

A lot of uncircumcised white folk are negative about this, whilst the black folk who are mostly circumcised are not. Tell me which race has the higher AIDS infection rate Einstein.

      Irene - 2011-11-25 18:09

@Chauke ~ Most whites aren't circumcised and they also take a shower afterwards, just like your pressssident.

      Ronald - 2011-11-25 18:34

If you didn't need it you wouldn't be born with it. Nature has a funny way of changing the body to what is required. We have not needed to dig for roots as a source of food for ages, so the thickness of the nails has reduced over 1000's of years, but we have been having intercourse non stop. The practice of circumcision is based on religion, ethnic practices or hygiene. Religions have caused millions of unjust deaths and have been involved in many dubious practices, so that does not carry water for me. Ethnic practices are man made and include head shrinking and cannibalism, bride kidnapping, child brides, human sacrifice, etc. So that one doesn't work for me, either. The tradition of circumcision based on hygiene makes some sense as many countries do not have ready access to water and some are just to lazy to wash.

  • Kotie - 2011-11-25 17:24

Teach them rather to take a shower afterwards... Duh!

  • braamc - 2011-11-25 17:28

Spreading the message of getting circumcised, not the message of wearing a condom, like that alcoholic, beetroot thieve and her drinking pal Mbeki - the virus does not create Aids. Absolutely typical of these dumb useless Anc government

  • Gavin - 2011-11-25 17:46

After the men have the 'snip', aids will still prevail. Tomorrow they will advocate that the woman now go for 'cosmetic surgery' (for want of a better term), and aids will still prevail. Then in there infinite wisdom they will say. One sexual partner only .. but I have 14 wives and work in another town .. there I have 2 girlfriends? Eish what now? Aids will still prevail .. DELIVER A SUSTAINABLE PLAN PLEASE.

  • Jason - 2011-11-25 18:54

Hahahaha!! I was at this guy's (Aaron motsoaledi )house about a month ago...I wish this story came up before then!!

  • BubsyBobcat - 2011-11-25 22:45

They have no actual proof, they have a couple flawed studies with dubious parameters, mixed and opposite results and they abandoned the third study because they weren't getting the results they actually wanted. And they're using THAT to try to justify a push for mass circumcision, which is only going to deprive the men of their sexuality, likely spread the disease even faster and lead to even more of an epidemic. It honestly would have been less expensive to teach about condoms and make them more easily available in the region than to do mass operations. They are also making it sound like condoms wont be needed if you're cut, compounding the problem.

  • MaxOdin.SA - 2011-11-26 01:08

How about abstainance???? Only one partner???? I've said before that even a condom isn't foolproof considering that the HIV virus is smaller than the tinyest hole ( measured in microns). So even double bagging is a risk. Stop sticking your weiner down every hole you come across and perhaps that will stem the tide of this life threatening scourge.

  • intactive - 2011-11-26 02:50

"...male circumcision reduces the chance of the virus being transmitted from a man to a woman" WRONG! WRONG! A Ugandan study (Lancet 374:9685, 229-37) started to find that circumcising men INcreases the chance of the virus being transmitted from a man to a woman, but it was cut short for no good reason before than could be confirmed. The claim is that circumcising a man reduces his chances of getting HIV FROM a woman, but not enough to rely on - perhaps as much as tossing a coin whenever he has sex, and being safe if it comes up "heads", but probably less than that. In 10 out of 18 countries for which USAID has figures, more of the CIRCUMCISED men have HIV than the non-circumcised. This should at least be explained before pressing ahead with mass-circumcision campaigns.

  • TLCTugger - 2011-11-26 05:20

In 2009 WHO researchers Wawer/Gray reported that the Ugandan men they circumcised were 50% MORE likely to infect their female partners than the men they left intact were. Most of the US men who have died of AIDS were circumcised at birth.

  • Robi - 2011-11-26 09:20

Circumcission is part of Africa 's culture. So, do n't be circumcissed by doctors. Just join the African youth in the mountain. In other word, the minister is encouraging unsafe sex. An impression is created that after circumcission , there is less risk without a condom. I think it is a dangerous statement which will increase the risk of HIV/ AIDS disease and cause us dearly. Lets stick to one partner and safe sex.

  • CarolynDewrance - 2011-11-26 11:40

What a load of crap, If all women were sterilized after their first or second child and all men stopped thinking that women were just sex objects, maybe then the Aids pendemic would eventually fade away. Maybe also sterilize all the men as well to reduce the rate of Biths in this county, and that includes you Mr President you are a disgusting reprensetive of our country. Or just take a shower.

  • gerry.de.bruin - 2011-11-26 13:45

And another "revelation"by a minister in the South African cabinet. South Africa never stops amazing me...the beautiful country with all the diverse ethnic groups. Amazing that somebody with no knowledge of medical studies can be in such an important position advising people on AIDS. Rather stick with the beetroot and garlic soup. At least the spreading of AIDS will be less, as the garlic smell will drive most people away.... Getting circumcised will only keep you safe from AIDS for about 4-6 weeks (that is the recovery time after the "snip") I'd rather abstain or stick with one partner (after testing of course)Condoms are still the best defense. Wake-up people! Get rid of this guy...do you really need stupid people in parliament? Write letters, e-mails, etc....

  • ozgurkaleozu - 2012-03-22 12:46

Hi friends, I wanted to share a video about male circumcision. Please have a look to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnIJQyhPY6U to see how the adult male circumcision is easy with disposable male circumcision clamps. Best regards, Ozzy

  • ndyeboreginaldmazawule - 2012-04-17 17:22
