Johannesburg - What should have been film-maker Anant Singh’s moment of glory on Thursday night turned into a nightmare when he had to face his audience at the UK royal premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom and inform them of the icon’s death.

According to the Sunday Independent, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate, who were in the audience, had received whispered news before the film ended. However, the audience had been oblivious to this until Singh delivered the news as the credits rolled.

He said he had received news during the screening but had decided to let the movie play on as he was sure that is what Mandela would have wanted.

He said the audience had been ready to give the movie a standing ovation when he had to interrupt them and deliver the news. He said that it had come as a great shock to have received the news during the premiere.
