Johannesburg - Lawyer Dali Mpofu is in a serious but stable condition after he was stabbed and robbed near East London's Eastern Beach, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Two people allegedly attacked him on Esplanade Road on Thursday around 3pm, said spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci.

The SABC reported they took his cellphone.

"He also sustained stab wounds in the upper and lower body, and was rushed to a hospital in East London."

No arrests had been made yet.

Mpofu is representing the miners involved in last year's shooting in Marikana, North West.

The SABC reported he was on a short break as the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the shooting would resume next week.

In a statement, African National Congress spokesperson Jackson Mthembu condemned the attack

"The African National Congress condemns the robbery and assault of Advocate Dali Mpofu today [Thursday] at a beach in the Eastern Cape.

"This act of thuggerism (sic) should not be tolerated as it undermines public safety and a threat to lives.

The party wished Mpofu a speedy recovery and that his attackers are arrested and brought to book, Mthembu said.
