Mpuma cops clamp down

Johannesburg - A total of 5 372 people were arrested in Mpumalanga for various crimes over the festive season, said police on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane said 45 of those arrested since December 1 were wanted for rape, murder and house robberies.
A further 156 people were arrested for drunken driving.
Khoabane said fines to the value of R828 227 were issued. Dagga with a street value of R350 000, 22 671 bottles of liquor and 3 602 firearms were confiscated. One hundred stolen vehicles were also recovered.
Separately, 1 164 foreigners were arrested since December for being in the country illegally. He said during the festive season police set up roadblocks and conducted anti-crime operations at priority stations in the province.
Festive season police operations would continue in Mpumalanga until schools re-opened.
