Mpuma man held for statutory rape

2010-09-07 18:04
Johannesburg - A man accused of raping a 13-year-old girl appeared in the Balfour Magistrate's Court on Monday, Mpumalanga police said.

He was found on a farm, allegedly with the teenager, 22 hours after her family reported her missing, police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Tshabalala said.

On Sunday the victim's mother had sent her and her 5-year-old brother from their home on Brakfontein farm to a nearby farm, to drop off groceries for their older brother.

The younger brother returned home without his sister. He told his mother she had gone off with another man. The family went looking for her and eventually reported her disappearance to the police.

Tshabalala said information they received led them to a house on Premel farm where the alleged rapist answered the door in his underwear.

He allegedly told police the 13-year-old was his girlfriend and that they had already had sex. He was arrested on a charge of statutory rape.

The case was postponed until September 14 for his bail application.
