Mpuma reservist in court for murder

Johannesburg - An Mpumalanga police reservist accused of murder has appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said Constable V L Shakoane appeared in court on Tuesday and was granted bail of R2 000. The case was postponed until May 16 for investigation.

He said Shakoane allegedly shot dead Vusi Mlombo, 26, on April 11.

Mlombo allegedly broke into one of the offices at the Caltex Building and stole a wallet and some other, unknown items.

Security guards chased him and were later joined by Nelspruit police. Several shots were fired to stop him from fleeing.

"It is alleged that the suspect was hit by a bullet once and he fell to the ground. He was subsequently shot two more times at close range while lying down," said Dlamini.

He was taken to the Rob Ferreira Hospital where he later died.

Dlamini said the post mortem confirmed that he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
