Machadodorp - The death toll from an overloaded minibus taxi crash near eNtokozweni (Machadodorp) in Mpumalanga on Monday has risen to eight, the provincial community safety department said.

The taxi, with Mozambican number plates, was pulling a trailer and carrying 24 people, including the driver, spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said.

Initially seven people were declared dead on the scene and 17 others were injured, 10 critically, with the remaining passengers sustaining minor injuries.

One of the critically injured died later on Monday at Rob Ferreira hospital in Nelspruit, said Mabuza.

The driver, who was also killed, apparently lost control while negotiating a bend on the Schoemanskloof road around 06:30, Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.

Sad!! The mozambican are always overloaded on the N4 toll route, you should see them during easter and festive holidays. But, guess what? They manage to bribe all the way from Gauteng to the Mozambique border gate.

you can blame taxi drivers or traffic cops, but passagers are also responsible. why get into a taxi while you see it has exceeded its number.

@Bongani, I get your point, but in most cases those passenger's better choice is to ride in a crowded taxi. The goverment is mainly to be blame, the taxi industry is in horrific state in this country, and they feel like they are above the law (The durban protests are a good example of this).

I know we call this the "taxi industry" when we rant about this nonsense happening, but perhaps we should be talking about it as the "meat grinding industry" instead. This is not funny anymore, lives wasted due to a rubbish behind the wheel.

It's very sad! Somebody working at a hospital in Centurion told me that she need to take two taxi's to get home after work. She said sometimes the taxidriver's are drunk or drives recklessly and if anybody say anything about it he will stop and tell them to get out and buy their own car, because they are earning a salary. So they rather keep quiet and hope for the best. Another point is that the passengers don't wear safetybelts because they don't think it is neccessary or there are not enough safetybelts for all the passengers. I would suggest that they indicate in the media with every accident whether the people did wear safety belts or not and whether the driver was sober or not.
