Durban - Disaster management teams from Mpumalanga were
on full alert and on standby for any disasters that might occur during the
festive season, the provincial department of co-operative governance and
traditional affairs said on Thursday.
The province was expected to experience heavy rains,
flash floods and thunderstorms that could result in an increase of dam and
river levels, making small streams and rivers very dangerous, said spokesperson
Simphiwe Kunene.
"Road users are urged to drive carefully when it is
raining, because roads will be wet and rocks might fall in some areas. They
must not drive over overflowing roads and water pools that obstruct their view
of the road," he said.
Residents of Mpumalanga have been advised to be extremely
cautious at all times and must avoid crossing full rivers and overflowing
bridges.
Municipalities have made plans to ensure that all
relevant officials and stakeholders are on standby throughout the holidays.
