Mbombela - Investigations are under way to determine the cause of a collapsed ceiling at the Mpumalanga provincial government complex building in Mbombela, where a public servant has been confirmed injured.

"We are not sure of what happened. As we speak the head of department (HOD) Mathews Mohlasedi of public works and Director General (DG) Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize of the province went out of the meeting we were having in order to assess the situation on what really happened," provincial government spokesperson Zibonele Mncwango told a News24 correspondent.

Mncwango dismissed rumours from government officials who claimed that an entire building had collapsed injuring scores of people.

"What we can say is that there’s no building that fell.

"The brief information we have from the call we got suggests that a ceiling fell on top of an employee, injuring her and there was panic from the employees. That is why some were saying there was a building that collapsed.

“More information will come as we get a full report from the DG and the HOD," said Mncwango.
