2010-12-14 13:30

Johannesburg - A Mpumalanga man was caught driving at 205km/h on the N4 near Bronkhorstspruit on Tuesday morning, the Gauteng community safety department said.

He was arrested after being stopped around early on Tuesday morning in his black Alfa Romeo near the N4 Bronkhorstspruit Diamond Hill toll plaza, spokesperson Zakhele Nkabinde said in a statement.

"The man informed our officers that he is a car dealer and was rushing to his business premise in Midrand. He was arrested on the spot and taken to Bronkhorstspruit police station."

He was expected to appear in the local magistrate's court on Wednesday on a charge of reckless or negligent driving.

Actually there is one additional word in that should be left out.

i dont blame the guy for driving that fast.those roads are so lovely to drive fast!!!

  • KGF - 2010-12-14 14:19

    When is "around early?"

      jean.dutoit - 2010-12-14 14:41

Around early is too morning day where late is not.

      Observer - 2010-12-14 15:12

I hadn't picked that up when I read it, but am having a good chuckle now. Thanks for pointing this out!

      d54 - 2010-12-14 20:30

Maybe he wanted to say they woke up with the lateness.

  • Nice Guy - 2010-12-14 14:26

205km/h is not that fast. As long as he is driving carefully it shouldn't be an issue

      jean.dutoit - 2010-12-14 15:17

I want to disagree with you there. 205km/h is plenty fast on South African roads. The average car on our roads cannot even reach 205km/h, and South African drivers are very much asleep behind the wheel, simply because the vast majority of drivers do drive like they're in a drug induced coma. Even if the guy has good reflexes and owns a car that has good handling at those speeds, a single sleepy driver may turn in front of him at a critical moment, at which time an accident is unavoidable. If you want to drive at high speeds, go to work in Saudi Arabia. The average speed for a car in the middle of a 3 lane highway is about 160km/h, and be prepared to fly at over 200km/h if you want to get into the fast lane. There you have a culture of fast and aggressive driving. Your speed should be relative to the speed of the cars around you.

      d54 - 2010-12-14 20:35

Up to 100 you are driving the car, 100 to 150 you are guiding the car, over 150 you are pointing the car in the general direction you wish to go.

  • Zoolie - 2010-12-14 14:26

If he was driving a beemer he could have gone faster.

      Krush - 2010-12-14 15:02

      haha

  • ohwhatever@24.com - 2010-12-14 14:36

wow...all you guys care about is the grammar? Get a life! @ftm - as for you, stupid and reckless statement to say the least - if you really do drive fast, I hope you to are caught and thrown in jail! As for the actual article above - I do hope this idiot gets the maximum sentance for breaking the law. Being late for work is absolutely NO excuse for driving about 100km/hr over the speed limit. Even if he didn't end up killing someone (or himself), the fact is it was only going to get him there about 10 minutes faster if he was lucky anyway! Why risk lives just for 10 minutes!

  • wendymuller1 - 2010-12-14 14:55

People know speed kills yet they continue recklessly endagering their own lives as well as others. They all believe, ignorantly like the many others already dead that they are invincible and accidents only happen to other stupid people. Doesn't the headlines teach us anything?

      Theuns - 2010-12-14 15:31

People are also aware of the fact that driving under the influence is illegal but yet they still do it - speeding is not our biggest problem on the road. People that don't wear seatbelts, talk on their cellphones whilst driving, not using your indicators in the proper manner, not keeping a safe following distance, cutting cars off and overloaded vehicles are much more of a problem yet it is mentioned very seldom. People should start concentrating whilst driving, it would make a huge difference.

      Edgar - 2010-12-14 15:32

Wrong, it's the sudden stop that kills.

      colored male - 2010-12-14 16:15

Speed does not kill it is the sudden deceleration of a fast moving object, anything above walking speed, unless u walk off a high bridge, which has the potential to kill. If you drive at 100km/h and hit a concrete wall you will die. Hit it at 200km/h and you will certainly die. How many ppl die at the speed of 200km/h? How many die in a taxi going nearly 100km/h? The fact is some ppl don't know how to drive with their driver's licence not to mention those hooligans who don't have one. Some in this country think that because they have one they don't need to obey the rules. It is not speed that kills (cos this dude is still alive) but the countless idiots behind the wheel who forget everything they were taught in the K53 manual. I vote for an autobahn like they have in Germany or is it Russia, or is it Cambodia. You know how many times driving at 80km/h in an 80 zone I have had to slam on the brakes because some whiner does not think about looking in his rear view 'mirra' or side mirrors before changing lanes? The politicians and JMPD bosses in this country largely r a joke when it comes to road safety. I mean why on earth consider fines as a source of revenue and then say speed kills and encourage JMPD to hide in bushes, and behind every other thing that can conceal them. K*k man it helps line gov coffers. How about a better test to determine a person's suitability for a driver's lic and better training for new potential drivers and more visible law enforcement
