Johannesburg - Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza's sick leave has been extended indefinitely so that he can recover from severe exhaustion, a News24 correspondent reported.

On Sunday his spokesperson Zibonele Mncwango said doctors ordered the extention to help him recover.

Mabuza’s return to work has been postponed twice since he collapsed and was airlifted to a hospital in Gauteng on September 8.

He was initially expected to return to work three days later but his leave was extended until September 18. Now it has been extended indefinitely.

“Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza’s recovery at home is well on track. We... wish to inform the public that community safety, security and liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe will continue to perform the duties as the acting premier until premier Mabuza is fit to return to office,” said Mncwango.

The premier’s office appreciates all well wishes and prayers from different corners of the province, he said.

“Premier Mabuza was booked [off] by doctors to rest due to severe exhaustion. The Premier... had not taken sufficient time off in the past five years in office,” Mncwango said.
