Mbombela - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela presented the Mpumalanga legislature with a report on Thursday detailing complaints by residents in the province, her office said.

Madonsela had received "a litany" of maladministration and service delivery complaints, her spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said.

These included gripes over land restitution, youth unemployment, payment of service providers, and the functioning of municipalities.

Madonsela visited some municipalities in the province and heard from residents who mostly mentioned non-delivery of services.

Billing, infrastructure

"Key concerns centred around excessive water and electricity billing, sewage spillage, non-collection of refuse, poor state of roads, poor service by the police, and defective RDP houses," said Masibi.

There was no system which ensured that people who applied for RDP houses were registered and provided with appropriate services while waiting for their houses.

"The public protector pleaded with the executive to ensure that the issue of housing is attended to and that it does not keep on cropping up during her interaction with communities."

There were health services problems at the Emalahleni municipality. Residents complained about a lack of equipment and understaffing at clinics and hospitals.

Premier David Mabuza undertook to attend to the concerns Madonsela raised, said Masibi.

"The premier assured the public protector that an action plan would be submitted... stipulating how the provincial government would ensure compliance with the remedial action," she said.
