Cape Town – Thousands affected by heavy rains on the weekend are receiving much needed relief, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.

According to the city’s Disaster Risk Management Centre records 25 689 people in 6 904 households in Delft, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Nyanga, Philippi, Old Crossroads, Somerset West, Strand and Valhalla Park were affected by the heavy downpour and freezing temperatures.

City spokesperson Wilfred Schrevian Evan Solomons-Johannes said: “While water levels were a challenge as a result of the high levels of rain that fell in a very short period of time, no structures were flooded and no evacuations were necessary.”

No damage was reported to infrastructure.

Solomons-Johannes said the City will continue with its relief efforts for the rest of winter.
