Johannesburg - Two men from a gang linked to a series of violent crimes including murder and robbery appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Thursday, police said.

"Their case was postponed to January 24 2013 for further investigation," said Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, adding the men were remanded in custody.

He said the pair had been linked to eight incidents of crimes including murder, attempted murder, business robbery, housebreaking and theft which had taken place in Muldersdrift since July this year.

Dlamini said three other men arrested in connection with the same cases will appear in court on 31 December. "Police are in a process of holding an identity parade, which may see the suspects being linked to more serious and violent crimes in the area."

Dlamini said it was possible that more arrests would still take place.

The five men were arrested last week in two separate police operations after a stolen credit card was used to withdraw approximately R9 000 at a pub in Diepsloot.

During the arrests, police recovered a two-door Pajero hijacked in Midrand, which was believed to have been used to kidnap a man during an armed robbery. The kidnap victim was later dropped off in Midrand.

Two people were killed and three seriously injured during the gang's crime spree.

The gang is believed to be responsible for a number of house robberies, as well as a business robbery at Nulaid Eggs and another robbery at a farm, where a large number of live chickens was stolen.
