Kimberley - Speaker of the ZF Mgcawu district municipality, Nokhaya Mjila, died on Friday, almost two weeks after she was set alight, allegedly by her husband, Northern Cape police said.

Mjila, 45, died at the Rosepark MediClinic in Bloemfontein early on Friday morning, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

On May 30, Mjila's husband allegedly doused her in petrol and set her alight at a relative's home in Olifantshoek.

Mjila's 9-month-old granddaughter and two other relatives died from their injuries.

The 48-year-old husband was arrested shortly afterwards. He was still in hospital in Kimberley under police guard, Naidu said.

He would face charges of murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and arson and was expected to appear in court soon. The motive for the crime was not yet known.
